Do you think it's fair?

I criticized my friend (female) that spending $350 on a bag/purse was absurd. She says that spending that much or more on computer equipment is absurd. She thinks it's a conflict of interest and that it's basically equal in the sense of self worth. I said that shes only spending that much money for a fashion statement that will expire in only a few years. Then mentioned that it was similar to me spending money on a computer for video gaming... hmm... Do you think it's the same? The way I look at it is computer hardware has a justified price and clothing and fashion crap doesn't.

Whats the consensus here?

She's right.

Edit: You don't see the same value in a $350 purse as she does. She doesn't see the same value in a $350 video card as you do.

You're an idiot. You can mildly poke fun of women for spending tons of money on bags/clothes, but you can't criticize them. Have fun never getting any.

BTW, as hypn0tik said, she's right.

she wants an overpriced bag/pruse so she can look trendy, you want overpriced computer hardware to inflate your e-penis and FPS for gaming.

i think the general consensus is: she's right and you're a moron for criticizing a girl about shopping

It's probably going to stay in fashion longer than your current videocard is "in fashion".

I also don't expect it to be as likely that you'll think it's cool in a couple decades to go retro and use your current videocard again 😉

The kid has a point. But I only say that because I am incapable of noticing the difference between a $20 and a $350 purse.
I don't see a problem with a $350 coat though - a quality coat, I can appreciate.

But $350 bags/lingerie are retarded.

Edit: Too each his own. It's okay for you to think she's absurd...just don't tell her that. That is an argument you will never win.

shes wrong. it's all about functionality.

u NEED to upgrade to play the latest video games.

she doesnt need a $350 purse. walmart sells some for $9.99.

Most non-computer literate people can tell the difference between a $50 graphics card and a $350 graphics cards. People who like clothes CAN tell the difference.

THANKYOU, that was the point I was trying to get at... You're a girl, right? (can only hope)

The difference I'm seeing is that you can get something with the same functionality for significantly less but a video card, you can't, if I paid a premium for something just for bragging rights and not for any discernable(sp?) performance, then I'd say I'd be just as bad.

Style is a form of functionality.

Do you buy $10 shirts and pants at Wal-mart and wear a $5 plastic watch with them? Are your clothes Intel GMA 950?

Depends what you expect from your clothing. Not like her bag is heavy duty and she'll be carrying power tools or people inside of it.. It's pretty hard to get by with integrated video cards if you expect to play a game at high settings, paying a premium for a video card actually gives something back, but when you pay a significantly higher premium for a bag, you've got to ask what this bag can do.. $50 for a bag is fairly reasonable, but $350 seems like it's just for show.

I asked my mom about it and she agrees...

While I feel the OP would have been better off keeping his opinion to himself & after 15+ married years would never dream of saying somthing like this to my wife, I feel I must point out the flaw in reasoning here.

A 5 cent paper bag can do just about everything a $350 pocketbook can do & a $15 pocketbook CAN do everything a $350 pocketbook can do... if its a fashion knock-off it'll even look close to identical.

The same cannot be said for a high-end computer part, or for the sake of argument a high-end pair of hiking boots, sunglasses, rollerblades, golf clubs etc.

We all have different levels for what we consider sensible, for style and for video cards.

I buy $30 polo shirts instead of $100, and wear a $50 watch instead of $500, but more expensive clothing and accessories can have a positive effect on others' perception of you.

Just like in an RPG, the watch of charisma +1 is $100, while the charisma +3 version costs $3,000 🙂

Functionality is not always about how long it lasts or how much it can hold, espeically with clothes.

Why not? Shouldn't couples be open to each other? I feel as though people don't express what they truely think for fear of retaliation or being single(ed out) etc. While it isn't always appropriate to say what's on your mind at the time due to your thoughts possibly being influenced by environmental factors which could effect good judgement or how you normally feel etc. But for the most part, what I said during the conversation is what I've generally always believed and I don't think it was really influenced by anything unusual.

I guess it's a test really, if you can't handle a "heated" conversation with me or not take everything I say personally but more as a suggestion or the like, then it wasn't really meant to be anyways; better now than later I say..

i like how when ten people disagreed with you, you said nothing, and then one person agreed and you jumped all over it.

consensus? you're a fool for being so closed minded.

you're probably also an uber-dweeb wearing $10 walmart shirts your mom bought you, along with tape on your glasses because they're just as 'functional.'

I'm not so cheap as to shop at walmart for clothing and I don't wear glasses nor do I own anything that is being held together by tape or glue that I can think of.. Having said that, I'll only spend a good amount of money on something if I believe I can get good use out of it for quite some time.
