Do you think giving a refurbished item as a gift is wrong?

Well here's the situation. I am going to be getting my GF an iPod shuffle for valentines day. Disgregarding how you personally feel against the shuffle, I'm going to get her a shuffle.

I saw on outpost they have a refurbed 1Gb for $89, while a brand new 512Mb is $99. A brand new 1Gb is $149 as well.

I only have $150 to spend on her for a gift for VDay because we are going on vacation 4 days after Valentines day and we want to have enough $$ on vacation.

I also want to get her a few accessories, such as an armband and a pink casing for it.

Now here is my question ... do I get her the refurbished 1Gb for $89, or a brand new 512Mb for $99. After accessories and stuff it'll probably be a little under $150 regardless of which one I get. But is the refurbished stuff going to be decent for a gift for VDay, or should I just get her a brand new one?

I don't think she will even know the difference regardless, but I was just wondering if there is some type of unwritten rule about giving refurbished stuff as a gift to an SO :p.

Also, where is the best place to get iPod Shuffle skins? There are a lot of them out there and I dont know what is quality and what is not, and I also don't want it to cover up the buttons on the shuffle.

I don't think there is anything wrong with giving a refurbished item as a gift.

Of course, I used to give away my old computer parts as gifts to friends whenever I upgraded...

would depend on your girl. if shes a practical person i dont see where she would mind, and would appreciate the other accessories and you nose for a good deal.

if shes a princess? well then do it and make sure she doesnt find out is a refurb. if she does find out, just tell her "honey, i thought it would be more important to have the extra cash to make some great memories during our time together."

if she still gets pissed, dump her.

How do you think she would feel if you gave her an used ipod for her birthday?

its not about the extra cash at this point, its about the extra memory on the iPod :)

but youre on a "tighter" budget due to the upcoming vacation?

if money is no issue than get her a new one and accessories.

I wouldn't do it, unless she knew it and didn't care (and I'd hope she wouldn't care).

i perosnally don't like buying refurbed anything. i've seen enough stuff go back to be fixed and sold again only to either be not fixed at all or break again shortly after.

only if there is no way for her to find out such as the person is dead ect. But if she finds out you can kiss her goodbye for good.

ahh i get it. so youre getting her one for under 100 anyway so you can add accessories. is she a big music fan? if she would rather have the space, then get the gig.

would go back to her being practical, etc.

It really depends on the SO. If she is the princess type (spoiled) or you are newly dating, you may need to get a new one. If she is laid back, refurb FTW.

If she is the princess type though, I would not stick around. I hate that crap.

I personally would not mind it beinging referbed one.
I got a slightly used camera for christmas and I love it. My hubby got it for me and i didn't care at all.
I would do it. just my opinion.

I truly believe that giving a used gift is tacky in some respects. At the same time, I also believe that money is precious to us all (especially with the economy going downhill the last 5 years)....Give refurbs....they're usually just as good as new. (if not better)

Solution:

Don't give her the packaging, open up the Ipod-Shuffle and pre-load it with her favorite songs, and then pack it in some nice pretty Valentines day packaging and chances are she'll never know the different. Most refurbs look brand new (otherwise I'd return it if it was scratched up or something).

I buy referb stuff all the time...

I got my digital camera at like 1/3 the cost that it would cost new, and it works great...

Go for it dude!

If I were receiving a gift, I'd prefer refurb with twice the memory..but I guess that depends on the person.

Who voted yes? JLGatsby?

I'd say it's fine as long as it works, and doesn't look lilke it's been placed somewhere it shouldn't. It's not like you're giving her a used needle or used lingerie. It's in factory new condition, and you saved $$$ for the vacation you're taking her on. No problems at all.

I would never have taken that risk with my wife when we were dating. I still make sure that if I am buying her a used/refurb item that she is OK with it before I purchase.

right now... she does not have a shuffle. so, a refurb is a step up. there is no problem as far as i can see.

it is a gift. gifts should be about the thought of giving someone you care about something they will appreciate. it is not supposed to be about a price tag.

:)
