Don't give her the packaging, open up the Ipod-Shuffle and pre-load it with her favorite songs, and then pack it in some nice pretty Valentines day packaging and chances are she'll never know the different. Most refurbs look brand new (otherwise I'd return it if it was scratched up or something).

good thinking

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking of doing. I ordered her a pink skin for it already as well. I was gonna make some nice packaging and give it to her all "cute-ed" up. I hadn't thought about preloading songs on it though ... which is another great idea :)

I can put "our" songs on it, as well as a bunch of her favorite songs.

I'd be thrilled with the 1GB, particularly if you took the time to load it with music !

keep in mind though that I'm a weird woman, I value frugalityb and admire those clever enough to pick up on really good deals.

now the question is, where are you guys goin on vacation this time? Aruba again?

Nicaragua, that's where she is from. It's gonna be an experience to say the least because I don't speak spanish well at all, but I can understand it much better than I can speak it. And at first we are going to the area her family lives, like in non-tourist parts, so I don't know what to expect.

after that we are going to a few beaches which should be nice.

Also the refurb is at outpost for those wondering.

wel I just went and ordered the 1Gb shuffle. Gonna put it in the case and put songs on it, and possibly try to find one of those stuffed animals that hold a little heart with a zipper on em and stick it in there then give it to her :)

I don't see a problem with it, used is different from refurb. IF it comes in a nice box that's a plus, but you could always come up with a romantic way of giving it to her that allows you to take it out of the box or something.

This sounds like a sitcom plot, maybe a Dick Van *** show. The husband gets an used present for his wife. He overhears her talking about a friend whose husband did the same thing and how cheap and low rent he is. And the rest of the show is about Dick trying to replace the gift without Laura finding out.

Save yourself a lot of grief and get her a new gift.
