Do you think fat people have a choice in choosing their weight?

Do you think they have a real choice in choosing their weight? As in they can lose the extra pounds if they really wanted to.

Or is it a disability in that they have very little control over their own weight?

To a certain extent. Some people will always be bigger than others but other than a few rare cases, you can't get to weigh 300, 400, 500 pounds without making a hell of a lot of bad decisions.

But yes, I do think there are natural body types and some people are simply born with the tendency to gain weight more easily. They can still do something about it but it's a lot harder than, say, those guys who weigh 150 lbs no matter how much junk food they eat.

Lastly, I'd rather be fat and healthy than thin and unhealthy. Better to eat right and exercise and still weigh too much than to be lazy and eat shit for food and stay skinny because you have the genes for it. Those people may look thin but they're not necessarily healthy.

there maybe medical issues that could cause difficulty in weight loss i.e. a tumor or hormonal issues. My grandfather was telling me a story the other day about removing a 44 lb tumor. ( i think he said 20kg) but those are strange issues. most people should be able to lose weight.

fat and healthy 😕

at my heaviest, I was probably close to 500 pounds. :Q (don't have an exact number because what fat person weighs themselves?)

nowadays I'm around 250 and don't really see any impediments towards losing the last 50-75 pounds that I want to drop.

yes, fat people have a choice.

I think it's more difficult for some people to lose weight, but it's never impossible.

more difficult? how so?

Some people stay thin without much effort at all while others have to be very diligent about diet and exercise.

As a fat man, I would def say choice. If I wanted to I could lose the wait, but I am just to lazy to get up and work out.

I think that anything that causes damage to the body should be considered a serious issue that needs to be dealt with, instead of giving the person the choice to do something about it. The reason is that addictions (food, smoking, drugs) modify your brain to make you think it's ok to be addicted to them. Basically, the person is not in control anymore. It is a person's duty to provide assistance, since the addicted is not in control anymore.

My disabled son was on ADHD medications for a while (he doesn't have ADHD but they were throwing meds at him). He started gaining weight like crazy. This was when he was in elementary school and he's in college how, and he never lost the extra weight. Since he's now 6'4" a bit of extra weight isn't all that obvious.

However, the guys he was in special schools with all are on med cocktails. They are ALL way overweight. I watched them all get fat. You recognize the look - tubby and shuffling, uncoordinated.

I agree that many, many people could lose weight if they'd change a few habits (my favorite, ordering 3 desserts and then asking for low-cal sweetener "because I'm watching my weight").

But there are some people who have issues that are out of their control.

I think we all have some natual baseline that our bodies like to stay at. For some that's a normal size, for others it's thin, for the rest it's overweight.

Depending on which way your body size naturally wants to be makes certain things easy to do. If your body wants to stay lean then gaining weight is hard. If it wants to stay heavy, then packing on pounds takes little effort.

From there it's a battle of willpower and desire on just how hard you want to work against your body.

Flipping through the channels and stopping at the Biggest Loser finale the other night answered that question for me. I'm sure there are plenty of large individuals who have a real disease as the reason but for most it is a love for food and sitting around.

I'm not talking about enormous tubs of lard, I'm referring to people who are slightly to moderately overweight who exercise regularly and eat healthy but can't drop those last few pounds. It's totally possible to be overweight and healthy, just as it's possible to be thin and unhealthy.

For a vast majority of the people, yes. You can argue no though because some people simply don't have the mental fortitude or just plain lazy to care about their own weight.

Doesn't that make it a choice?

Yeah, it does. Just like how smokers or alcoholics choose to continue their habit. Some people may be genetically predisposed toward addiction, and food addiction isn't really any different.

So it sucks to be addicted to something that requires such willpower to break free of, but it's still a choice.
