Blah blah blah, drunk driving is evil, etc, etc.
If you people lived in the real world, you would know that there are probably DOZENS if not HUNDREDS of people driving on the streets of YOUR TOWN who are drunk RIGHT NOW.
I'm not "in favor" of drunk driving, but lets be reasonable. There are plenty of other situations (cell phones, screaming kids, allergy attacks, fatigue, driver AGE, poor car maintenance) that make you just as much of a risk to others on the road. The catch is, none of those things are easy to target as the "cause" and nobody wants to say (for instance) "let's take away driver's licenses from everybody over 80."
I was driving home the other night at 3 am and I almost got plowed into by 4 people. Of the 4, I concluded one was drunk and the other three were complete freakin morons. (one was on a cell phone, reading a map, with her dome light on.... another looked like they were literally falling asleep in their car...) If I hadn't reacted, any of the 4 would probably have hit me. Now, why is one of those four people "a bad person" and the other three are just unfortunate victims of circumstance?
Edit: Oh yes... lest I forget... I'd guess that most of the people "driving drunk" (under the legal definition) are doing so LEAVING A RESTAURANT OR BAR.... now... do you honestly believe that everyone serving those people doesn't know how many drinks they've had? I can think of a few bars/resturants where, for instance, they can even see you DRIVING UP AND DRIVING AWAY and they will certainly serve you more than 1 drink an hour. Oh, and most places will tow your car away if you leave it there overnight. Hmmm... What an odd situation - almost like the whole restaurant industry exists to get you drunk....
