Which will give new meaning to a BSOD :)

No. If the penalty was instant death, idiots would still do it. If cars were wired with breathalyzers, someone would find a way to bypass them.

Crime can never be prevented with punishment, and there is no safety this side of the grave. Get used to it.

Drunk driving laws are bullsh*t.

You're guilty before you do anything without any intent to committ a crime. Thanks to years of MADD BS we have BAC that are set far too low, .08 is a fvcking joke. By the same logic MADD uses we should also arrest everyone who drives distracted, tired, talking on a cell phone, etc.

I'm all for locking someone up who gets in their car with a .22 and kills a few people, but the current laws have gone way too far the other way.

1st offense: $1000 fine and suspended license for 1 year AND 30 days in jail
2nd offense: $2500 fine and suspended license for 2 years and 6 months in jail and forced rehab
3rd offense: $5000 fine and license revoked for LIFE and 5 years in prison.

Now, if any bodily harm or fatalities are involved, I think the punishment should be even more severe!

Yeah to bad that time when I drive "drunk" since i blew a .08 after having a few glasses of wine with my significant other at a nice restaurant that I saved up a few weeks for... Now I'm completely broke, my kids/wife/family/friends/job are without me for 30 days, and I have no income since I'm in jail. And not to mention since my work required me to drive something I am promptly fired and in desperate need of employment. Next employer sees me as a criminal since I just got out of jail.

Lovely.

Well...that's the law. Don't like it? Pare it down to one glass of wine. Three glasses of wine I have a good little buzz going on. Not drunk and I could most likely drive a car just fine but when you have that little buzz your reaction times just aren't as quick as when you're 100% sober.

Simple solution...You get pulled over and test past the legal limit, BAM, you get shot in the face on the spot. Now if that doesn't deter people, no problem. You just keep shooting them on the face. This helps in two ways, it gets rid of the excess people we have, AND there will be NO repeat offenders. ;)

Blah blah blah, drunk driving is evil, etc, etc.

If you people lived in the real world, you would know that there are probably DOZENS if not HUNDREDS of people driving on the streets of YOUR TOWN who are drunk RIGHT NOW.

I'm not "in favor" of drunk driving, but lets be reasonable. There are plenty of other situations (cell phones, screaming kids, allergy attacks, fatigue, driver AGE, poor car maintenance) that make you just as much of a risk to others on the road. The catch is, none of those things are easy to target as the "cause" and nobody wants to say (for instance) "let's take away driver's licenses from everybody over 80."

I was driving home the other night at 3 am and I almost got plowed into by 4 people. Of the 4, I concluded one was drunk and the other three were complete freakin morons. (one was on a cell phone, reading a map, with her dome light on.... another looked like they were literally falling asleep in their car...) If I hadn't reacted, any of the 4 would probably have hit me. Now, why is one of those four people "a bad person" and the other three are just unfortunate victims of circumstance?

Edit: Oh yes... lest I forget... I'd guess that most of the people "driving drunk" (under the legal definition) are doing so LEAVING A RESTAURANT OR BAR.... now... do you honestly believe that everyone serving those people doesn't know how many drinks they've had? I can think of a few bars/resturants where, for instance, they can even see you DRIVING UP AND DRIVING AWAY and they will certainly serve you more than 1 drink an hour. Oh, and most places will tow your car away if you leave it there overnight. Hmmm... What an odd situation - almost like the whole restaurant industry exists to get you drunk....

Why should the person have to pay a fine and do jail time if they didn't even hurt some one or even damage a person property?

It doesn't matter because of our current court system they can get out of it and basically get away with anything, which i think is really messed up.

the penalties aren't related to how much it happens, people that do it are already drunk, they aren't thinking about the penalty

it will never cease

maybe in the future there will be some device in the car that will check your breath for intoxication

Sure. Someday all the cars on the road will be driven by computers coordinating with powerful city-traffic management systems and it won't matter how intoxicated the occupants of the vehicle are.

~2080 by my estimate. Yeah.

I think drunk driving laws are already extremely tough, especially in CA. Everybody knows it's a serious offense, but people still do it.

I think the only way is to provide better public transportation. Cheap trains, subways, buses, whatever.
