I always carry a pocket knife for every day purposes. I have a pretty neat 6.5" bladed dagger that I suppose I could carry, but I don't really see the need. Although I have heard some cops say that one of the most dangerous things is a person with a knife that knows how to use it; apparently a person good with a knife at 20 feet is far more dangerous than a person with a gun at the same distance (provided the gun is not already drawn) due to quick closing speed.

it is true.

BTW, the knife blade has to be 3.5" or less to be street legal.

and folding, and not spring loaded/self opening

Mine is spring load/self opening, but it is folded too. It is a good knife. Kershaw's are good knives. :)

A knife is really useless if you have never been trained to fight with one, you'd be better off with a bare fists than a blade and if you are faced with the wrong attacker, he could turn that knife against you quicker than you could pull it out. Plus a knife is useless in a gun fight.

I can find the Kershaw make for it later, but I am pretty sure it is street legal.

The blade can be opened two different ways, one from swinging it out like a swiss army knife and then it fully opens. The other is that part of the back of the blade is exposed near the joint and can be pushed out from there (almost like a button). It automatically opens when I do that, but the blade is 3".

Kershaw 1620 or something like that.

not always a option.

you can try to keep out of them even avoid most. but not all.

but personally i think a knife is the best protection you can have. but it is better then nothing.

For protection?
I dont know if its normal or not but its a very bad idea.

I got just enough knife defense training to learn that they are more of a liability than an asset unless you recieve extensive training with them. I dont mean just a couple of videos either.
I mean years with a professional trainer.
Not advocating people shy away from personal defense classes. But anything you get at the "Y" should just teach you how to avoid getting killed by them, not how to kill with them.

Specifically for protection? Yes.
Because it happens to be on you as a tool? No.

Also, to all the gun > knife advocates, while that's true in many situations, don't forget the "21-Foot-Rule." :p

I especially like the redirects that involve the knife being stuck in the attacker's thigh. :D

Yeah, I think its completely normal to carry around a small pocket knife. Mine's on a keychain so I always have it. But its not for protection, its a tool.

I think that the number of people who "know how to use" a knife as a weapon are few and far between. But remember that horrible movie with Tommy Lee Jones?

I used to get Chipotle for lunch during my summer job, and went there fairly regularly. I'd seen some hispanic gangs around, but never got any trouble from them. I drive a nicer car than normal (2000 Volvo S60). Anyways, one day I went and got my lunch as normal (I got take out and ate in my cubicle), and came out to see a hispanic guy staring inside my car. He saw me, we were about 25 ft away from each other. He had all the gang markings you could ask for. He fixed me with this mad glare, at which point I immediantly averted my eyes and started walking an evasive pattern back towards the chipotle (where there were a bunch of people eating). He eventually got in his own car and drove off, no damage to my vehicle.

Still, if he had come at me with a knife I dunno what I would've done. A nice boot knife might've helped in such a situation. Also, in close quarters, guns are pratically useless. A well trained fighter can counter almost any gun if it's within arm's length, whereas a knife is much harder to defend against. To defend against a gun in close quarters, you have to slap and dodge. To defend against a knife, you have to grab the assailant's wrist. But then again, the situation depends on the skill of the wielder. I had a friend who knows krav maga, and to demonstrate he let me use his airsoft gun in a "stick up" situation. The moment I got within arms length, the gun was out of my hands and I was on the ground. I never got off a shot in time to hit him.

Seems like a kinda hillbilly thing but I guess in more rural areas it's probably pretty normal.

I carry a nicer version of the Gerber like in Oroo's link. Mine's a solid stainless steel, with rubber inlays (sp?) on the handle though.

I use mine a lot however. Cutting boxes, striping wire. I know it's in my back pocket at all times should I need to defend myself, and I've had someone from our swat team and my sons tae kwon do instructor both show me the proper way to attack and defend with it (not the normal moves you'd think of, or not the one's you see in movies).

I don't carry it for the sole intent of self protection/defense though. It's more of a tool for me.

The collapsable police baton is my weapon of choice to cure stupidity.

Gerber were very good knives back in the day. Now with different alloy steel, there are better ones.

How much is a collapsable police baton?

Not sure, mine was free. Marine Corps MP issue actually. I've got military/police family.

Depends on where you live I guess. Where I live, there is no need to carry a knife for protection. Although there might be a probability of 3.1415% that I might need it for protection, I choose not to worry about it.

I carry a swiss army knife, but not for protection. It is a useful tool. It is normal to carry one, but not for protection. If you are worried about getting mugged or something, get a small pistol and a conceal carry permit.

Or a can of mace.

Meh...I dunno. If I was robbing someone and they maced me, I would shoot them. It is best to kill them before they kill you.
