I don't carry one normally. I live in a white collar area and work a white collar job. I worry about getting attacked about as much as I worry about stubbing my toe.
I own guns but I generally don't carry them either.

i keep a cheap swiss army knife in my golf bag and have a multi-tool in my hockey bag but nothing on myself. i don't think it's abmornal to carry one though. i mean if you have a huge Rambo knife strapped to your ankle you might have some issues, but maybe you just have a military background or something.

I know a guy that actually had to do this. Dog's jaws clamped down in his forearm. He lifted and put his knife in the dog's throat. Very messy. What he hated the most was all the rabies shots he had to get later.
Putting a knife in my pocket is as natural as putting on under garments for me- Have carried a knife EVERY DAY since I knew what one was...even in high school, and never had a problem with it. I take it off to fly since the "incident" at the airport with the wanna-be security guards.....
There have been countless times where it was "handy" to have it around and one real incident with someones Doberman where I had to use it for self defense.

I carry a Kershaw almost everywhere I go now. Having a high quality knife is very practical to have on hand. 
High quality knives are sharp enough for practically anything. I use mine to cut fruits I bring to work, open boxes/letter, cut wires, cut paper with precision.... They are basically utility knives that you can use to do anything with. I suggest carrying one, but I wouldn't use it in a fight situation. That is just moronic to escalate the level of violence. Most things can be resolved civilly, but in case of defending myself or a friend or family member, a good knife could be useful as well.

But I find multi-tools are cumbersome in your pocket, and the pocket swiss army knives are too low grade steel to do anythig but open up letters or as a last minute solution to cutting open something. Having a high quality pocket knife will always trump that.

I keep a knife in my car and generally carry a small one around with me. Not really for protection though.
I also keep a multi-tool in my work bag.

I always carry a pocket knife for every day purposes. I have a pretty neat 6.5" bladed dagger that I suppose I could carry, but I don't really see the need. Although I have heard some cops say that one of the most dangerous things is a person with a knife that knows how to use it; apparently a person good with a knife at 20 feet is far more dangerous than a person with a gun at the same distance (provided the gun is not already drawn) due to quick closing speed.
i highly doubt you could very effectively defend yourself from an attacker with a knife, but if it makes you feel tough then go for it. The thing with the dog I could see it being useful, but I dont run into make stray dogs.

I carry a nicer version of the Gerber like in Oroo's link. Mine's a solid stainless steel, with rubber inlays (sp?) on the handle though.
I use mine a lot however. Cutting boxes, striping wire. I know it's in my back pocket at all times should I need to defend myself, and I've had someone from our swat team and my sons tae kwon do instructor both show me the proper way to attack and defend with it (not the normal moves you'd think of, or not the one's you see in movies).
I don't carry it for the sole intent of self protection/defense though. It's more of a tool for me.
The collapsable police baton is my weapon of choice to cure stupidity.

Gerber were very good knives back in the day. Now with different alloy steel, there are better ones.
How much is a collapsable police baton?
As many have said above, I ALWAYS carry a knife with me (actually two since I have a SAK on the keychain). But its not for protection, its because its an incredibly useful tool. Although, if needed, I could and certainly would use it for protection.
