Do you think ANYONE can get through a four year college?

This is stemming from my immigrant topic, but anyways, do you guys think it's possible, if they try hard enough, that anyone can get through a four year college with a degree in say, comp sci? or if that isn't their thing then maybe, economics, etc etc the list goes on and on.

What's you take and why?

No. I'm not even factoring in all the distractions college offers. There's just people out there that wouldn't be able no matter how hard they tried; anything short of a brain transplant wouldn't be enough effort.

Could you maybe give some reasons?

No. There are some people that will try and try and will never be able to get a degree. I have friend that worked his arse off for about 8 years before taking the hint and pursuing something that he was more suited for. College isn't for everybody.

No. Some people are stupid.

Example:
I took a bio class this semester. Bio 20, "Biology for non-science majors". It was the EASIEST class I have taken at that school. I asked several other people in the class, and they agred with me that it was one of the easiest classes they had taken. There was one girl in the clas who is just STUPID. The instructor would start a lecture about, say, the liver. He would spend ten minutes explaining the parts of the liver and how the liver works. After 10 minutes, this girl raises her hand and asks "This is all inside the liver?" She would repeast questions equally as moronic 3 to 4 times per day, in every class session. Towards the end of the semester, the day before the final I beleive, I overheard her say to someone that this was the THIRD time she was taking this class. She had failed the class twice previously, and apparently hadn't picked up ANYTHING from her previous attempts. I'd be surprised if she's actually capable of graduating with a liberal arts degree, let alone computer science.

u need 2 things to suceed in college or school

1) determination
2) brain power

many people have neither, because their parents didn't read to them as a child or make them stimulate their mind, its harder for older people to learn but that's where determination comes in.

LoL...exactly....I was just trying to say it a little gentler.

Graduate??? I'd be surprised if she was capable of remembering to "Biggie Size" my order!!! 😕

Some of the people I went to school with didn't make it. Why?

Too much drinking or drugs.
No self-discipline.
Thought Daddy would keep paying the bills for however long it would take Sonny Boy to eventually finish. Daddy didn't.
Felt like they were being "pushed around" by the instructors and didn't like being told what to do (assignments, etc.).
Couldn't get along with other people (no social skills).
Were in a major that their parents wanted them to take and hated it.
Just couldn't get the whole "taking tests" thing. Knew the material, did well on projects, sucked on tests.
Were too spoiled and couldn't function on their own.
Believed they were entitled to the same amount of butt-kissing they enjoyed while being the Big Man at their high school.

For some of them, going to a different school would have made a difference IMHO. For others, it just wasn't going to happen.

true... you just have to be discplined that's all. college was my first taste of freedom, coming from an asian family. needless to say... i borked the first year going nuts wherever i can... too bad. if i didn't... i could actually be free right now after i could've graduated... and that would be all the freedom i could ever ask for. 🙁

I think you only need determination. If you apply yourself enough you can overcome just about any mental deficiency. If it means enough to a person, they will study 8 hours a day if they have to. Of course most people aren't that motivated.

Some people aren't ready for college when they leave HS. I wasn't. It took me several years to figure that out.

If all goes as planned, I'll be going back to college in 3 years after I move back to my old stomping grounds.

Before I read the responses to this thread I would have said yes, anyone can.

Now I don't know.

I do know that some of "graduates" I have had to train were less than bright.

He first started out in Economics. Passed the first class barely. Did better with his second class. Took the third class he needed 4 or more times - each time dropping the course mid-semester because he was failing it horribly. Then he moved onto CompSci. He barely pased the introductory class. He took the second class 4 or more times - each time dropping the course mid-semester because he was failing it horribly. And this was with me, a senior CompSci major, helping him as best as I could without doing the work for him. Oh and BTW, he worked part time during all of this and usually took only one class a semester. I'm sure he could try a different major and the results would be the same as above. Put the needle on the record, put the needle on the record...

He's now very happy in a lower management position for a national home improvement store.

Barring someone with a real developmental or learning disorder, you mean any person of average intelligence? Yes, I think just about anyone can, given that their priorities were right. The problem may be the work load or the pace of learning that is expected. I don't think the content itself poses as much of a problem as the pace you're expected to learn it.

Some areas of subject matter take me more time to grasp comprehensively than others. I'm sure the same is true for many people. I would do MUCH better today in college than I did when I was 20. My priorities have changed, I'm more mature now.

I've met very few truly dumb people in my life. I've met a lot of lazy and immature people, whose laziness or immaturity pose barriers to accomplishment for them, but very few dumb people.

Having been in college for a semester, I can safely say, given the absolute stupidity of some of the people who are there with me, that just about anyone could get a degree of some type if they wanted to.

"Fitting in" and being able to get a degree are two different things. Anyone could get a degree. Not everyone will fit in.

You think college is hard?!?! WAIT TILL YOU START EARNING MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, there's no reason to not get through college. As long as you pay enough attention in classes and put your fair share of effort in. You're through. 🙂

I think ANYONE can get through a 4 year college, unless they are in a coma AND have all their appendages amputated AND are deaf AND mute. You just need to find the right college. Maybe a low end community college with a 4 year program?

I base this on the fact that I know a music(?) major who got through college going a total of 60 hours of class for all four years. He got through on straight c's smoked up every day and when he got worried for about 5 minutes that he might fail something, he'd just call his professor saying he wasn't feeling well and BAM! C for the class. I disliked him.

I also know people with their CS degrees who have trouble with control structures....any control structures. ifs, elses, fors, whiles...you name it, they can't do it ...regardless of the language.

And then there are the IS majors by me, but that's another story altogether.

yea, for people with IQ below 75 or something. but you have to keep in mind, some people have a personality that, to say the least, does not lend itself to doing what it takes. sometimes this can be overcome, other times, the person is probably better off finding another route to success.

Only about 10% of the people in college should actually be there but with grade inflation and running schools like a business instead of higher learning institution we have dumbasses a plenty. The question is, are you one of them?

Edit and I think I was. No way I shoud have graduated let alone presidents list as lazy/dumb as I am.

Oh sh1t I forgot to answer you question (see reading comprehension problems) Yes 100% of the military academy grads graduate in four years in very technical fields like engineering. Also they have many more extracurricular activities you never have to worry about going to your state school.

Yes and No.

I think that 90+% of the people on the earth today--if they tried REALLY hard--could make it though an easy 4 year program (e.g.political science at a Cal State school)

However, about ~5-10% of the people out there are simply too massively defective to EVER have a chance at a 4 year program.

Remember, we are talking about in an ideal situation here were they had maybe 10 years to prepare for this.

Realistically, with world literacy rates hovering pretty low (~60% ??) I doubt more than 30% of the people out there could do a 4 year progam even if they tried and tried (assuming they had only a reasonable amount of time to do it)

Note, all of these stats are made up, but all of them should be within +-20% of their relative targets. 🙂
