For the food-is-enough folks, be sure you get them from places grown in non-depleted soils (like your own backyard).

love the last paragraph.

UT’s Davis warns that just because fruits and vegetables aren’t as healthy as they used to be doesn’t mean we should avoid them. “Vegetables are extraordinarily rich in nutrients and beneficial phytochemicals,” he reported. “They are still there, and vegetables and fruits are our best sources for these.”

like i said get a blood test to find out what you need to take.
that's insanely stupid.

people who gulp down pills because they "Think" they need them are retarded.

You DO need them. It's not a "gee I need to check if I am deficient in anything" it's much more a "top off on a huge list of things that you will not be able to with food alone on 19 out of every 20 days of regular eating."

I would love to hear what a doctor would say if you asked him/her "I need a blood test to find out what vitamins I need".

After they were done laughing, of course.

there is talk now of fish oil actually being bad for your heart.

and yet I take it and it lowers my cholesterol

damned if I do damned if I dont?

the articles posted harped on not taking the big megas that dose the HELL out of you with beta carotene, vitamin e and a

also why many suggest taking 2-3 a day...and I take one....most days.

:hmm: I wonder how humans managed to survive so long without multivitamins.

😀

No. For the most part, the OTC multi-vitamins only make expensive piss that is often rather brightly colored.

this.

the marketing whores in the multi vitamin industry have effectively convinced the sheeple to spend billions of dollars on their own piss.

Something like 90% of these vitamins will not be metabolized by the majority of users.

...and everyone though Steve Jobs was the most brilliant crook out there. 🙂

Well apparently that 10% is doing something good, as my allergies decrease in severity by about 80% when I'm on my multivitamin. 😛

Are you a woman or told by a doctor to take? Calcium for men is not good unless a doctor has told you to take.

Since when?

According to the National Academy of Sciences, men are supposed to get 1000 mg/day with a safe upper limit of 2500.

Edit: Found this. Hmmm. Might switch it down to 600 mg/day.

They sell multivitamins with antihistamines in them now?

No, my brilliant theory is that I'm deficient in something, smartass; and I value my sinuses' input on this over your opinion. The pattern has been made quite clear over the years.

I don't take a MV. I take a Vitamin D supplement every few days on the doc's recommendation since he said it was the only thing low in my blood test.

I might quit taking them (MV) after I run out... haven't decided. I will still take the my D for MS related reasons.

Calcium also increases men's chance of prostate cancer.

http://www.webmd.com/prostate-cancer/news/20080903/calcium-levels-predict-prostate-cancer
There is good evidence that men whose diets include a lot of calcium or those who take calcium supplements are at increased risk for prostate cancer.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/451471-calcium-and-prostate-cancer/#ixzz2WttaiQjr
An epidemiological study published in the February 1998 issue of "Cancer Research" suggested that men who consumed more than 2,000 mg of calcium daily had a three to four times higher risk for advanced or aggressive prostate cancer than men who consumed less than 500 mg daily

I never go anywhere near 2000, including diet, but if I cut the calcium supplement in half, combined with what's in the multivitamin that puts me at 810 mg + diet. According to everything here, that should be fine.

Wait what? I always had the impression it was GOOD for the heart? I'm taking triple strength ones right now. Though I'm taking it because I was told to, it's to help a skin condition. But I was planing to continue even after as heart issues run in the family.

Apparently it depends on the rest of your diet, although this is just one study; in mice.

The moral of the story: Eat fish twice a week and screw the capsules.

I can only have chewable since my body cant dissolve the horse pill varieties. I take Centrum chewable once or twice a day as a pick-me-up to make it the rest of the day.

Your body can dissolve any multivitamin and it's a lot better to take one which has a chance of absorbtion.

I don't notice anything from MV's, if i need a pick me up i get some Behepan, 1000 X your daily need of vitamin B12 and increase my caffeine intake.

It's also a lie that your body can't use synthetic vitamins, apart from vitamin E (the absorbrion rate is around 30% for that and no one really knows why) it treats them the exact same as if they come from any other source.

So overdosing them isn't a bright idea either, vitamins in too large amounts counteract the minerals and even each other and a too high intake can actually lead to vitamin/mineral deficiencies.

It can affect blood pressure and while it's excellent for your arteries it can damage your heart if you take it in too high dosages.

EFA's, like anything else are best used in moderation.
