I'm not argueing that there aren't people that shouldn't be squatting. But there are far too many people that say they can't, when that just can't possibly be the case. I would say, that out of 10 people that say they have "such and such problem" that 8 of them could actually squat and find that squatting properly and regularly would actually help them

i was doing dead lift machine and squat machine to get back in to it, but it aggravated my back again. come to find out my L3, L4 is now ruptured and needs another fusion. it's not like people with problems don't try. but whatever gets your jollies off man.

80% of the men at my LA fitness gym just do curls, bench and shoulder exercises. And when I look at their legs...so skinny o_O

It's so hot when I see a girl do actual squats at the gym. It's rare though since I go to one near a fashion/shopping district, everyone is usually doing bicep curls with 5 lb weights while standing on a bosu ball. I strategically chose to go to this gym since they usually have the hottest women while the free weights area is largely empty most times. win win :p

On a positive note.. Had a friend and long time fitness guru show me how to do squats with dumbbells a new way. Turns out that using dumbbells is actually harder and I can use lighter weights to achieve the same level of workout without crushing down on my arches. And it was pretty simple, instead of grabbing a ton of weight off the floor on each side, just pick up about 40 pounds on each side and put them in rest position you would as if you was doing a dumbbell shoulder press. Then just do the squats.. I like it, doesnt seem to bother my feet since I am not leaning to to forward. So Woot!! Woot!!

Meh compound exercises in general are win. Both deadlifts and squats are easy to fuck up / get hurt.

Only Gym is 30 mile drive from where I live and thats one huge reason I do everything I can at home. Some of the leg press and deadlift machines I used while in the Navy had you laying on your back pressing with your legs for the leg press and then could be converted over to let you use your hands to hold and do deadlifts. Its sounds strange but that alone was enough to help me take the pressure off my arches and press/lift my brains out. Mind you most of the pressure was thrown back on my heals, but with good shoes it didnt bother me. Most gyms have these machines but I for the life of me cant remember what they are called. Until I get lucky to move closer to a gym that has these or until then I am on a search for some really REALLY good shoes that have insane arch support for lifting. 100 dollar pair of Nikes and 60 bucks worth of arch supports from the docts office are great for walking but dont do duddly squat for deadlift or squats :)

I remember being in a similar situation a few years back. For a 2-3 year period, my gym was a good 35-40 minutes (depending on traffic) from my house, and about 25 minutes from my job. Making that drive round-trip after work 4-5 times per week was not fun. Definitely helps me appreciate now being about 2 miles from the gym.

OT, I know, but your comment reminds me of the picture in the Stronglifts manual where the trainer has the guy balancing on top of a FULL exercise ball doing squats :eek:

For real. That trainer needs a huge kick in the balls for even thinking of something so stupid.

There was a guy at my former university gym who would carry one of those exercise balls to the squat rack area, set up shop, and then do a series of exercises (barbell curls, squats, shoulder raises) all while standing completely on the ball. I generally never minded, but I did see him lose his balance once and almost face-plant onto the curl bar rack in front of him. Can only imagine what might've happened if he hadn't caught himself in time, or if someone had been walking near him at that moment.

To this day, I don't know whether he truthfully did it for any appreciable benefit, or just to try and look "cool."

TO me, that squat ball thing makes me fell like anyone using it is just looking for the fastest way to get a hernia. I had a Indirect-inguinal-hernia when I was 21. I aint gonna do anything to cause that again..

LOL yes they do. I have had 2 back surgeries, now have a 6 inch rod drilled thru the center of my spine and 6 more pedicle and facet screws. I hear all the time people bitching because there knee's hurt and cant do it...

"really? show me the hardware in your knee that says you cant do it...ohh you have none, must not be that serious if the doctor doesn't see a need to operate, maybe loosing 100lbs would help your knee's"

Now I can't squat like i used to, and yes it FREAKING hurts my back....but I still get in there and do it. I am not stupid and I stay safe about it, but gotta do it.

I have people all the time in the gym go, "wow its amazing your even in here, let alone squating"... Then I think to myself, whats the alternative? sit at home, make excuses and be a fat ass?

You are 100% right, people will make up every reason in the book not to squat or dead...hell most people are "too busy" to even go to the gym, But yet have time to watch tv at night or play on the computer and eat snacky cakes.

Err you know there's another things to do besides squatting? Leg presses would be far less stressful on your back. Won't really hit hamstrings or glutes, but that's something I'd trade for being able to walk...

Leg presses don't really compare to squats for several reason. As far as I'm concerned, as are many others, there isn't a lift comparable to squatting. Are they for everyone? No. But they're not really any alternatives to squats once you understand the physiological effects of squats you'll understand this.

Very true, although if it came down to potentially affecting my ability to walk and/or would result in incessant pain or health problems, I'd give them up for leg presses and hamstring curls in a heartbeat.

Today, I have swollen knees from fluid build up, so much it's difficult to bend my knees or even walk. This after doing leg presses and deadlifts yesterday. I can only imagine how much worse it would be if I did squats.

I've been working out for 25 years and nothing pains me more than not being able to do something, but I'm also not an idiot or a masochist. I don't like the pain and swelling for 4-6 days after doing squats. For whatever mechanical reason, the swelling and pain is not as much when I do deadlifts/leg presses. This will pass by day 3. So, I'll just stick with that.

working out after a spinal fusion and having another ruptured disc that requires another fusion operation within another year (treating with cortisone injections right now) does not make for a very comfortable workout. especially when said workouts put a lot of strain right at the point where you had the fusion (l4 l5,)

In the same boat. Had a fusion last year (l5 s1) I wont even thing about doing squats or deadlifts.

Lets be honest with everyone here. If your healthy and in good shape to do Squats or Deadlifts, they can and in most cases can be very beneficial to your workout. But not everyone is built the same and everyone should be careful start light and work up to a safe load without blowing your back. Bad part is that everything always seems fine until its blown, then its blown. Thats just how your back is. For those that have had surgeries and continue to do squats or even more demanding dead-lifts, to me your a fool and I look at you the same way I look at lung cancer patients smoking 2 packs a day.. Nuff siad..

I can do every workout at home in my own little bedroom gym, but I dont do deadlifts. I have had a bad hernia before and just dont feel comfortable. But I do Bent-Over-Rows which I feel covers my back well enough. Squats how ever I can do, but I go light enough to get a good burn after 10-12 reps. I still weigh to much so it doesnt require much weight. I know at some point to get bigger on top, that I am gonna have to do deadlifts. Which I do plan on starting in about 10-12 weeks from now after I have built up enough muscle that I can feel more comfortable doing them. Right now I feel like I got legs and arms of Kermit the Frog, so until I bulk up as much as I can in other places, dead lifts could re repture my hernia. 15 pounds of lower intestines dont belong in your nutsack. But if I am careful and add more muscle to my lower waist line, then moderate dead lifts in the future can be safe for me. So its all about being smart with things and not trying to impress anyone.

Finally added Deadlifts to my routine this morning. Starting out light though at around 100 pounds plus the 12 pound curl bar. Think my butt cheeks took most the burn this morning. I am gonna keep it modest and work up over time as not to re-rupture that old indirect-inguinal hernia :p hehe
Between the 30 min eliptical workout, squats and deadlifts; my legs are shot! LOL But over all I felt it was a great workout.
