Do you still play old PC games?

I for one still play some old PC games I still own.

Such as:

Half-Life
Age of Empires II: The Conquerors
Ultimate Doom / Doom II: Hell on Earth / Final Doom / jDoom
Hexen / Hexen II / jHexen
Shadow Man
Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds -Clone Campaigns-
Serious Sam
Turok II: Seeds of Evil
Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal

And a few others that aren't installed. I play them because, simply, I still like them almost as much as I did the first time I discovered them. The graphics are somewhat important for me, but are still coming in second place, or even third place after the actual game-play quality (or, simply said, fun) and/or story line. In fact I still prefer some of those more than much more recent games with top-notch graphics and particle effects.

What about you?

Every once in a while I will replay a few older games such as Diablo 1 and a game from the C&C series

I still put in a few sessions of WarCraft III per week, in some shape or form.

Other than that, STALKER has been eating most of my time again lately, prepping me for the upcoming expansion/prequel doohickey.

If you count the original Unreal as old (since it's coming up on 10 years old this year), I actually play that more often than any other game...:)

Edit: And with high-res textures and updated renderers (both of which are still actively being worked on), the graphics are still pretty good.

I still have games from years ago that I have yet to finish or even open, so no. If I had infinite amount of time though, I'd really want to go back and play some of my favorites.

Certainly.

The original Quake with it's many modifications and updated engine(s) is one game that never gets uninstalled.

I love the original Unreal also. If you have Unreal Tournament, I would recommend getting some single player map packs like Operation: Na Pali and 7 Bullets.

I actually downloaded a mod for UT99 that lets you play the original Unreal campaign. I've only played it briefly, but it seems to work very well.

No. No they really aren't. And I love that game.

But in all honesty, you're being charitable to it, because it's a classic. And I can relate. But it doesn't stand anywhere near toe to toe with titles from the past 3 years, I don't care how you mod it, nor should it.

To SD2001's credit, I don't think he meant the graphics can stand up to those released in the last few years. There's only so much you can do with a 10-year old game engine, and given that, I think we could all agree that the graphics are pretty good.

Compared to newer games, I think we'd all say those Quake graphics look like crap. But relative to the graphics of the original game that came out in 1996, I think they look amazing. :)

The graphics may not be up to todays standards, but the artistic level design far surpasses anything I have seen in any game, ever.

Playing Baldur's Gate II as I type (sort of, it's minimized). I can't play old 3D games, though... only 2D/isometric-type games like old console RPGs (Phantasy Star IV comes to mind). I also played FF7 last year and hated the graphics, but enjoyed it anyway.

I have a large library of old titles under constant and heavy play rotation. In fact I'm playing through Descent 2 right now (D2-XL).

I disagree; with the high-res textures the game is quite stunning in places.

I spend just as much time with old games as current ones, if not more. The dated graphics stick out for a few minutes when I load up the game after a long time, but I get used to them quickly and don't notice after a while. Some games have aged much better than others though and still look pretty good to me, even ones from very disparate years.

I'm currently going through Lemmings Revolution and Jedi Knight 1, both for the first time, and plan to replay System Shock 2 after that. I actually got Jedi Knight many years ago but somehow never got past the first few levels back then. I have also been playing Freespace 2 (SCP) online with some friends on another forum, pretty much every Saturday for the last few months. At the moment, the various content packages don't work online and the game looks no different than it originally did, although this should change in the next month or two.

That game had a number of fanmade mission packs that surpassed the original levels in many ways. I would especially recommend the Entropy series, Phobos Encounter, Project Mandrill, Encounter at Farpoint 2, Obsidian and The Kryllidian Krusade. Some of these have some exceptional level design considering the engine limitations. I think you can still get all of them at PlanetDescent. The creator of D2X-XL has himself also made a couple of excellent level sets that take advantage of the engine enhancements, which are on the program's site. I did a marathon run through all of the 150 or so D2 levels I had collected in D2X-XL just last summer.

Do you know of anything good for D3? I don't think D3's mapping scene ever took off the same way, at least for singleplayer, but there might still be some gems out there.

I'd like to, but some of them just don't play nice with modern technology. Like the Infinity Engine games (Baldurs Gate 2, Icewind Dale 2). This is painful, because I really like the Infinity games.

One old game I can still play, and really like to play, is the original Deus Ex. I put this in a couple of months ago, and was amazed to see that I can run it at 1920x1200 res.
