I have over 1,800 CDs. All ripped to my PC, and I'm ashamed to say that I'm lazy enough to mostly listen to them through the PC sound system now instead of playing the CDs on a real hi-fi system.

I have ~500 CDs, all copied to the iPod. I still prefer to play the CDs at home.

yep.

I don't have any mp3s or any sort of mp3 player--excluding win7 on the desktop and laptop, of course.

--oh wait--my shitty Samsung dumb phone plays mp3, sort of. I have The Last Waltz box set and some bitchin' CCR loaded as mp3s on there, but I haven't used it in 1.8 years, because it's a joke and barely works.

I have quite a few, many CDR burns (with CD Text), tons of software CDs and DVDs, DVD-R burns. It's a problem because they're all over, I often don't know where to look for stuff. I have a plan:

I bought 1000 paper sleeves. I have a drawer that I believe will about fit them all. I'll need to do some customization of this drawer (it's in the desk I'm sitting at right now). I'll need to devise columns and indexed separators and a means of finding any particular disk based on the indexing of the separators. In tandem with that I'll need to keep a data table that records what disk corresponds with what position in the system and print an occasional report. I can either pick up the paper report to locate a disk or do it on a computer. I'm a database programmer, not difficult at all for me. The most challenging part is fixing up the drawer/separator system.

even boxed up, though, this many CD's takes up a ton of space and it's not as if I live in a house where I can just throw them in the attic and forget about them.
I work (vol.) at a college radio station and we continually add CDs to our collection We have about 100,000 separate items, including CDs, LPs, 7", 10", 12" vinyl, and all kinds of compilations. Since the early 90's CDs have dominated. All this takes up a lot of room and we've been running out. There was an LP purge a number of years ago. Our policy on new music is to encourage the staff (DJ's, basically) who review and add music to the library to only mark for keeping only more choice items. I'd say that 50-70 percent of new stuff is not so marked and only stays available to our DJs for airplay for a month.

A project was started around a year ago designed to save us a ton of space. For artists that have more than one CD, we remove the disk and the front and back insert info and toss the hard plastic. We put the disk and info in thin pliant plastic sleeves that we purchased custom made. We keep one CD of each artist in standard packaging. This makes it easier to find a particular artist on the CD shelves. This project has shrunk the size of the CD portion of the library tremendously. I imagine you can find plastic sleeves that will accommodate CDs and furnished info, however I know we had ours custom made.

that's the option I went with.

it's going to cost a few hundred, but I think it'll be worth it to free up the space and get everything nearly organized.

Yes. Don't know why... I buy the CD, play it once through, then burn it at variable bit rate, stash it on my bookshelf and never touch it again.

I'd easily pay hundreds for peace of mind.

I get nervous with clutter though.

I downloaded probably 80% of the discs I already owned back in 2008 when I bought my first PMP, a Cowon D2. Touch screen, and fucking horrid. Upgraded to iPod a few months later. Since then I've needed to rerip a cd from time to time. So yes, I keep the physical discs around. My new rig will rip a 45 minute to .mp3 in 90 seconds. Takes me longer to copy the results to the three machines my music sits on than to rip.

Yes, quite a few. I actually burn the few Mp3's I have bought to disc, don't really use Mp3 players.

I still have over 600 LP's, and many many cassettes. I did get rid of my 8-tracks long ago.

Considering I have about 20 or so, yeah. No real reason to get rid of any of them, although typically I rip them to my computer.

I still buy CDs exclusively. I frequently buy them 40+ at a time at the used stores.

They immediately get ripped to FLAC and put into binders, never to be touched again.

I refuse to pay money for lossy music, and used CDs are too damn cheap to pass up.

I have a system with 5 DVD drives, assuming no scratched discs I can rip ~80 discs an hour. Works great for ripping people's collections who want to move to digital.

550 at home.

I am not re-ripping them up to LAME codec on EAC, VBR 196 or higher. Very nice quality (especially compared to their original 128 rip).

The hardest thing is findinga portable player that can hold them or can be expanded to hold them. I hate deciding on what songs "I will listen to the most".

The CD's were recently put into two huge binders and all the jewel cases (about 4-5 old beer cases) are in the attic. The only thing that really keeps me from throwingthem out are the jackets/booklets, although I have not "played" a CD in 5+ years....

I only use CD's in my vehicle, which is a 2001. I'm too cheap/lazy to get a better radio in it that can use an mp3 player.

I only buy CD's for bands that I love, to support them.
