Working outside is like air conditioning compared to where I work.
Imagine putting yourself 10 feet down in a two foot diameter hole where you are surounded by steel that is 180 F which is covered with oil and water. Usually I only spend 1/4-1/2 hour down there every hour or so, but you might be down there for an hour swinging a hammer or throwing grinder sparks all over yourself.
Hey, someone has to make the axles on your car.
What the hell do you do in a confined space like that?
I'm a diemaker, actually my classification is Die Repairman
I refurbish the tooling. I'm ususally down there with a few air grinders and an air chisel. Heating steel to 2250 F and squishing it into a shape causes a good deal of erosion to your forming steels. If it breaks I'm there to fix it.
The Upsetters (where they make the axles) are like a very large press with two rams coming in at right angles, only the press is laying on its side. One ram actually comes in a holds the round stock while the other forms the heated end. The axles move from top to bottom being formed more through a series forming steels until the final flange is made.
I have to crawl down into the opening where all of these forming steels are. I call it industrial mountain climbing.
