Skied from 6 to 19, and have snowboared every since then. It was tough giving up skiing since i was really damn good, but i couldnt afford both set ups. Plus i grew up skating so the move to snowboarding was natural (took me 1/2 a run to pick up carving).

Skier for 16 years, boarder for 3.

I've been to Mammoth six weekends so far this season, and the snow's the best it's ever been as of late.

I prefer skiing on freshly groomed slopes, boarding in deep powder.

Unless your skis pop off and go shooting down the mountain ahead of you, leaving you to walk down.

Or unless you fall and break your wrist snow boarding after trying and failing miserably to do a 720 ;)

hahaha! That's true :D
One time a skiier fell near me, and I saw his skis come off. They were the super-short 'ski-board' type. One of those skis took off down the slope and I took chase. It was going straight down the hill, and I was right behind. I finally overtook it, and turned so that I was downhill of, and in the path of the runaway critter. Just as I stopped, the ski road right over my skis and binding, and continued on down to the bottom of the hill. Both myself, and the ski-less man couldn't help but to laugh at what I had tried to do. :p

Been snowboarding for 20 years.

There was a statistic in USA today that showed the progression of the peple on the slopes. At one point there were more snowboarders than skiiers. But now it's about 50/50.

I believe it
When I go to the more local slopes in SoCal (like Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead) the ratio is more like 85/15 for snowboarders

Ski. Snowboarders get in my way :)

Really though, I've only become truly comfortable skiing ~3 years ago. Skied once/year when younger, but it's hard to maintain any consistency that way; esp. when that skiing is in North Carolina (ughhh). Now I get out to Colorado once or twice a year for ~week-long trips with some pals.

I definately don't want to get into snowboarding--don't want to learn all over again...

I'm a much better skier than snowboarder, though I haven't done either in over 3 years. Of the 3 times I've been snowboarding, I probably spent 75% of the time on my butt. Still had fun though. :p

I've never been much of a skateboarder (never good at it as a kid) so I'm wondering if that'll equate to about what I'll be as a snowboarder. I find skiing somewhat analogous to rollerblading.

Yup. And 90% of those boarders are either on their knees or a$$. Very annoying.

I can do both about equally, and I enjoy both but having said that I enjoy both at different times.

Skiing is much easier to relax and negotiate very hard terrain without wearing myself out and enjoy the scenery. It kind of reminds me of a manual car(snowboarding) vs. automatic(skiing). Not that skiing is any easier, but that its not as strenuous on your muscles and stuff for the same experience on a snowboard. Snowboarding in powder is much easier than skiing, and falling is a little easier, but skiing its easier to move around on flat terrain. You also can lose your skis if you fall, luckily I can't remember the last time I fell skiing.

Overall I enjoy going on the mountains as a time to relax and enjoy the mountain not to get a work out so skiing wins for me.

I used to ski. Then I picked up snowboarding. Got rid of my skis. Never had a desire to ski again. Boarding is hella more funner.

I have never tried boarding, but I've been skiing for many years. I really stink at skateboard, is that any indicator of how I would pick up snowboarding?
On skis, I can go all day without falling, ski backwards, pick up another person's gear and make it down some icy crap without poles. I'm getting old enough to avoid the air time though:)

can I borrow that thing?
I keep telling my friends that I can easily do 50mph on my skis and they won't believe me

Well, after 13 or so years of skiing, I tried snowboarding for the first time last year, and I've never skateboarded. I found it relatively easy to pick up. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that I am very familiar with how a ski/board can respond to the snow, and I've seen many of my friends learn from scratch, so I kind of picked up on their mistakes.

I think a better one would be in-line skates vs. skateboard. ;)

I lived in a desert first half of my life, then a tropical crap-hole the other - never even seen snow. :( But I think I would love to try snowboarding because, well, it looks cooler. ;)
