Do you ride your tires until the treadwear indicator?

So I got my first car ever a couple of weeks ago. Well I got a good price on it, and I took it to a mechanic and he says it's mechanically sound, so I bought it without asking for anything to get fixed.

So I've been checking my tires... and I observed the following:

1) Right front- 4/32 inch above treadwear indicator... Bridgestone Turenza EL42 (OEM tire)
2) Left front- 8/32 inch above indicator- also a Turanza EL42
3) Right Rear- 8/32 inch above indicator- a Yokohoma Avid V4s
4) Left Rear- 4/32 inch above treadwear indicator... again a Turenza EL42

The previous owner told me she had to use the spare once.... so my guess would be that the original front tires were worn out, and they were replaced with a Turenza and the Yoko... my guess would be that the 4/32 Turenza's are still original tires (~51k miles on my 05 Altima)

I also see minor cracks (like the one you see on dried up rubber) around the edges of the 2 old tires... like a band of very small cracks right on the edge of the sidewall and tire surface.

So... do I have time to replace my tires soon, or will they just blow up any day because of the small dried up cracks? Wouldn't want that to happen as I'll be driving ~150 miles this weekend.

Why would you say 4/32 instead of 1/8th inch?

i was just looking at my ruler and it divides into 1/32 inch... I think my tires have about 3/32 to 4/32 left... paranoid, I know 😛

I wait until i can see the steel in the tire before i replace it. ANd it's one at a time as i need it.

Sounds like they're pretty near the end of their useful life. You could probably squeeze a couple more years out of them, but it's not worth it IMHO. I'd go ahead and replace all 4 before winter rolls around. They should be fine during the summer.

But it's like they say, the cheapest part of a car is often the driver...😉

/edit, I was thinking 2/32, changed.

How long did you run your tires before they invented steel-belteds?

1) Replace all 4 tires at once and make them the same model
2) Replace all 4 tires at once and rotate them properly
3) Repeat

these things are the most important part of your car.

how much tread does a new tire come with (ie: BF Goodridge Traction T/A)? 16/32"?

i think 4/32 is fine during the summer. but replace them in oct/nov when snow season comes. you want at least 6/32" for light snow traction.

keep the 8/32" and put them in the rear. buy a pair of matched tires, and put them in the front.

you want the front tires to match so that if you emergency brake, one will not grip the road more than the other, thus causing you to veer into the guardrail, or even worse, onto oncoming traffic

Personally, I never mix tires on the same car...but that's just me.

I'd replace all 4 tires with the same exact tire on all 4 corners.

i looked at the Yoko Avid's and they come with 10/32 treads.... so i think the 8/32 are good for a while at least

I'm just a bit worried about the small dry cracks on the edge of the sidewalls... would that be a sign that they'll blow any second?
