Do you reveal your wage to your co-workers?

Have you revealed your wage to your co-workers? if so why or why not?

At my last job I never revealed my wage to my co-workers, because I knew I made a little more then some that had been there a little longer then me. I never revealed my wage because I was worried about a backlash of comments and rudeness from my fellow employees, plus the fact that raise time was coming up and I didn't want trouble from the management, not that it mattered in the end they troubled me about everything else 😛. Please vote and add your thoughts.

It only leads to trouble. I'm relatively sure I make a significant amount more than others in my position, and I see no reason to share.

I use an approximate I normally give what I make +/- 5/hr to my coworkers. Friends and former coworkers if they ask I will tell them, but I don't just talk about how much I make constantly. I know people like that and they are annoying as hell.

Hmm.... I was just thinking though, how do we know management isn't using our reluctancy against us? How do we know that we are being payed fairly in comparison to everyone else?

Nope, no need to stir that pot. Besides which, some places I have worked at salary discussions were specifically listed as grounds for termination in company policy.

I made the mistake of commenting on my review once to a co-worker who tehn proceeded to flip out, never do that again. 😛

What if you're making more than everybody else and your co-workers raise hell to your boss. Either he has to give them all a raise to keep them happy, or lay you off. Which is cheaper? Just don't go there.

everyone knows what everyone makes around here. All attorneys of any given class year make the same in this firm.... partnership is a bit different, though.

Nobody is ever paid failry in comparison to everyone else. That's the beauty of it. You can be making twice what your co-worker is just because you're a better negotiator.

Do you really want him knowing that he's busting his but for half of what you're making? Nope.

When I was gunning for a big raise I let some key people know how badly I was being underpaid. I haven't told anyone since then how much it is.

I did at my current job, but I know I am underpaid and planned on leaving soon anyway. I found out they were being paid the same amount and they wanted to leave as well since we never get raises(one has been here 2 years and hasn't even gotten a 3% raise). At my new job the pay scale is set so it isn't really a secret.

nope. why would i want to.

though if someone pushes it i tell them a something nobody would beleive. say $50k an hour or $5 an hour. usually they get t he point.

I would back when I was in high school, because I was stupid. After a shift supervisor, found out through someone that I made more than she did and made a stink about it, I learned my lesson. In a professional setting, it can and will get you fired. You might assume that everyone around you makes close to the same wage, but thats not always the case. Many in programming know that you get to the top of your salary range by changing jobs every couple of years. If you've been programming more than 3-4 years, and not making at least $60-$70K, then you either suck, or you've been comfortable at your job for too long, and have trailed behind others on salary. What I'm getting at is that you might be making 70K/yr, working next to someone just as good as you making 45K/yr that hasnt realized how much he's capable of making. If he comes to find out how much your making, and he demands more compensation from his managers and threatens to leave, you'll probably find your ass fired.

nope, I started off and make much more than my coworkers.

if anything I joke about making minimum wage when we work OT.

Im a public employee. My wage is revealed to EVERYONE.

Mine too. Anyone with internet access can find it.

Same here. My salary and range are part of the Annual Budget document and public information. Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

People that get uptight about money really need to relax. You can't take it with you when you die.

Focus on the things that are important in life.

Two jobs ago I did, but then again, we were all way too damn 'chummy'. Those that didn't, I just *cough* 'unavoidably' glanced over when doing some filing in employee files. Some pages took longer than others to turn...
