my friend and i worked together at my last job and we shared.

So, how much do you make pontifex ol' buddy ol' pal

$33k

i've already talked about my salary on here many times.

My income (as those in similar positions) is directly tied to my job performance, so it's pretty much common knowledge within the office.

Im a public employee. My wage is revealed to EVERYONE.

Mine too. Anyone with internet access can find it.

Same here. My salary and range are part of the Annual Budget document and public information. Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Yes, but do your coworkers know how to use the internet? 😉

Overall I guess wages are like a game of poker(no I don't know much about that either) loads of bluffing and lying.

Hmm.... I was just thinking though, how do we know management isn't using our reluctancy against us? How do we know that we are being payed fairly in comparison to everyone else?

You've got a point.

I worked in HR where everybody had the capability of looking up everybody else's info, and it was honor system not to do so. I never looked up the info of anyone without a business reason.

Did I share my own comp info? Yeah, ballpark for some people, exact for others. It helped the department realize that we were being underpaid and forced a comp review ultimately. [Edit] I only shared when asked, never offered that info.

Heck no, and at the business I'm managing it can get you canned. Even though we're a seasonal employer that doesn't pay more than $1.00 over minimum wage to anyone but a select few, we've had a couple of employee scraps start over a 50 cent difference. Talking about wages is now strictly off-limits 🙂

I'm in a union and I imagine our contract is filed with the department of labor and as such is available to the public.

But then we would have to know you REAL names and branch of Gov't or position would help!

I have never told anyone what I make. Not family, friends or coworkers. I'd tell my wife, but she doesn't care and never asks. And I've never asked anyone else what they make, either.

It was said earlier - nothing good can come from it.

When I got my first job out of college my parents obviously knew how much I was making there, and when my aunt asked what my salary was my mom told her. When my mom asked her how much her son was making (almost my age, same college, same major) she said she had no idea.

So yeah.

To talk about it is unprofessional, unethical, stupid, and grounds for termination with most employers.

This is stupid. Why is it any of these things? Unless your employer is employing the "good old boy" system where they pay their friends more when they are less productive, there's no argument against sharing salary information. Even if I give you the first 3, grounds for termination is just ludicrous. Being fired for telling someone how much you make is going to get the employer sued for wrongful termination.

Regardless of social stigmas in my opinion if a business fires someone for honestly telling someone their wages that company should immediately be disbanded and all executives tried for a serious crime. NO ONE can tell me what I can and can not talk about.

my parents knew how much i made after i got the offer letter (and I assume they told the world...), but after getting a few raises I haven't told anybody the exact dollar figure yet. I've heard conversations where people get downright nasty when it comes to compensation and pay grade. If anybody asks I say I maxed out my raise....1%.
