Lower than asking is ok, lowballing is not.

Example, I sell something thats honestly worth $300 used and they offer $125 I tell them to stop being cheap bastards.

I can't recall ever being lowballed on something. We've had a few people who said "oh, I can't afford that" - otherwise everyone's paid what we were asking. However, our prices aren't inflated - they're the prevailing prices for what we sell.

I do get sick of seeing ads on Craigslist that are 100's of dollars more expensive than the current retail price. "Hi, we purchased this 40" LCD in 2005 brand new for $2000. We'll gladly sell it for $1500." Ditto for computers.

Yeah those are hilarious. I don't even try on those because I don't want to deal with idiots.

I normally append my CL ad with:

"lowballer offers will be ignored, jerks will be signed up for spam"

On a $300 item? I might respond if $275 was offered but $125? No, I wouldn't respond.

I'd ignore it. Why waste time on it.
Or I'd reply, "If you throw in your mom, we can talk".

If someone lowballs me by 50% or more, I tell them to eat shit.

If it's less than 50%, I'm usually polite and tell them I can't accept that offer.

At the same time, I'm not an idiot with pricing. I research the going rate for a particular item, and I'll post it near that price.

Hah, people will literally lowball anything on there. Recently dumped some 3 year old laptops, out of warranty but still nice (2gb ram, 15.4", 160gb hdd, vista HP) for $100 each. Got offers like 'will you take $50 each?'.

I don't like to dick around with stupid shit. So when I post something on CL, I set a price where the first person that shows up will buy it. I say so in the ad and I add that the price is set, no offers accepted.
If I got a low ball offer, I'd ignore it.

Ditto. That first sentence sums up my entire mentality in selling used shit. Yeah if I were really patient and anal I might be able to sell the crap for more, but c'mon, my time and sanity are worth more than that, I'd rather just sell for a bottom-dollar price as someone smart enough to realize it's a damn good deal always pops up, and I can ignore the morons who waste their time trying to lowball an already unbeatable price.

Yes I respond, i try to be polite but I hate low-ballers.

I have a $100 GC on Craigslist right now, asking 75 for it, all I ever get are $50 offers.

Uhm. I'll usually reply saying sorry... if I'm really ticked off and if I'm expecting market value, then I'll post a link to ebay to show how much the item CAN sell for. it's effectively a "nice try" sucker.

I don't even respond. There's no way they are going to pay my asking price, or anything reasonably near it so there's no point.

Just put the lowest price you're willing to sell it for and write price is firm no negotiation.

I'd rather ebay or sell a lowball priced item to my next door neighbor with significantly less risk and hassle than a random person from craigslist.

If you thought that's bad, I had a guy lowball me over the phone for a car. When I politely declined, he called back telling me my car ain't worth jack and he's doing me a favor. After declining him again, he called back AGAIN putting my car down and trying to convince me I'm stupid for passing it up. Needless to say I ended up selling my car for very close to my asking price. Some people are just weird like that.

yeah, that would be a bit unsettling for me. do you guys have a separate phone for this kind of "business"? maybe a prepaid phone that you can use? me, i don't list my phone on my posts... if they're interested enough i'm sure they'll email me. and in the email, if they sound normal (and not weird), then we can move along to a phone transaction if they're serious.

I just email an offer of $35.00 on a set of Cerwin Vegas speakers listed for $200. I explained to the guy this item sells for $135 new, has some dents and is missing the port tubes.

I have yet to received a replies.

Am I low balling?

as a seller you are trying to sell. If you are so pretentious you will fail.

Just say no, maybe counteroffer with your fair price (many sellers indeed list too high, but that's their perogative).

Lol, tag. I got into it one time with some asshole on craigslist, eventually he stopped as he was digging himself a hole of retardedness.

Screw that. You'll still get offers for a lower value, no matter what you say.

The one thing that truly pisses me off about CL, is that everyone thinks that no prices are set in stone.

Say I sell a laptop, and I truly only want to get $400 out of it (lets say it goes for $500 on ebay). If I list it at $400, I'll get offers for it anywhere between $300-$350.

So, in the end, because everyone wants to haggle, I actually will raise my price, so that people will haggle me down to price I really want. I'll list it at $450 instead in the hopes they'll offer $400.

:awe:

I just bought a NEW 24" LCD with high resolution and great contrast from Dell for ~$135 shipped. Why do people think they'll actually get $110 for a used 19"?

People will buy a used lcd for $100. The other $10 is there to be negotiated away.
