Do you remember this case?

I have the Antec version without the front door, the SX840. Bought it in 2001, put the window in myself. It's been in constant use ever since. Last year I finally found a front piece without the built in molded floppy drive space so I could add front usb3! Currently has a Skylake build in it.

I think I had something similar for a short bit before I sold the computer. This was in 2006 or so.

I think it was an Ultimate or Ultima brand case? I'm not 100%. It looked very similar but I just remember the case being ridiculously large. I mean, needlessly big. It had a side window and it was decked out with a Zalman 9500 (dat full copper life; back when that was a decent cooler and was like $50!) and who knows what. I think it probably ran a E6300 with at 3.4Ghz or something. I regularly got any E6300 I owned to nearly 100% overclock (yee old glory days...) with minimal voltage tweaking.

Things have changed...

Probably "Ultra Products" (from TigerDirect). They had some cases that had a similar front bezel to those Chenming, etc., cases. Very similar, probably same OEM.

Yep, think that was it. I think I had the case in the link below in silver. Seemed like a steal for whatever price I got it back then. It seemed huuuuuge.

Unfortunately, all my old email accounts were deleted long ago by the lords that be and I don't see any order in my gmail accounts. Trip down memory lane there...

I'd never get the thing now. Too big. I'm trying to find ways to make my cases as small as humanly possible. Back then, I was all about that dat cold cathode UV light and UV everything and what not. I think I'd be all about LEDs if I was younger again. But... UV CCFL was pretty dope too. UV parallel ata cables, baby...

Some of you may still own one. The design was re-branded often. I've found source where you can get the most recent version, Techland Associates in CA can order you the updated version of this case, CMUI-601AEB-U ATX in Black, but no window for $82 + shipping.

Talk to kittyyATtechlandpc.com

got one next to me right now. black chieftec. its got a working phenom system in it but it currently functions as a stand for my newer optiplex.

its a good case, except for the top door which broke off like a week after i put it together.

I got the smaller version of this case free after rebate more than once. Sometimes from TD and sometimes from Fry's Electronics.

What a blast from the past. I had that case in black with the door and rebranded by Antec with one of their power supplies included that I used for my Athlon XP 1800+ / Abit KR7A-RAID / ATi Radeon 8500 build from around 2002 or so.

Wow that brings back some memories. I seem to remember a website that specialized in painting those cases, something like case-art.com. I specifically remember one that was painted/veneered to look like it was made with a maple burl wood.

I KNEW it was going to be this case, just by reading the title. I owned one waaay back in the day! Loved it! Had plenty of room to put in an old water heater core for those old custom water cooling setups. Good memoriieeess...

Yes I had one like that from Antec, only it was beige with a solid door (no window). I think I had an Athlon X2 in there. I just threw it out last month actually (sorry, e-cycled)...

good old antec case. damn near indestructible. if the fans had been updated to 120/140 that'd still be a great case. way sturdier than all these fractals i've got right now (i had no problems using the antec as a step stool. won't even risk it with a fractal). better side panel design too. and better machining.

why do people think fractals are good cases, again?

It's the clean design and feature set for the price. NZXT, Bitfenix, Corsair, Phanteks, Cooler Master, etc all have similar cases in the sub ~$100 category, though. You usually have to go a bit higher for cases that have really solid feel and construction, and usually it's diminishing returns in other areas like cooling performance, noise dampening, and other features.

If you don't like Fractal build quality than I don't know who you do like in that regard. I own a crapton of modern cases by all the big manufacturers and as far as build quality, fit and finish, sturdiness Fractal is at or near the top. I am not talking boutique cases.

I had quite a few of the black Antec ones over the years, I think I gave the last of them away a couple years ago in an unsuccessful attempt to empty my garage.

I had an Antec 1040 Variant.

Did they make the Alienware color cases too?

Yes and no. What I mean by it is the Alienware cases were certainly some form of these cases. But I don't know who actually built them for Alienware.

I somehow managed to talk myself out of getting a Saints Row / Prince purple case, but it was a near thing 🙂

Still strange that some of these were “Antec” branded at a time when computer cases were the only thing Antec was known for. So they were putting their name on someone else’s case...
A lot of Case manufacturing specially back then was like this. I don't know who designed it, the Chieftec versions really didn't hit until well after the Antec versions did but they were cheaper and the exact same case so the Chieftec versions became the most popular. But several other companies had a version of this in their portfolio. But people forget that companies have to work their way from the ground up and often use third party manufacturers till they get more vertical. I don't know what Antec's manufacturing strength was back then, I don't know if Antec developed and had to license it to Chieftec to get their manufacturing (and then Chieftec then let others rebrand it), or if Antec commissioned the design with an expiration on exclusive rights, or if Antec simply got into the Chieftec factory saw the case and asked Chieftec for their first few runs. So I wouldn't assume right out of the gate that Antec just re-branded someone else's case.

I think the point of newer cases is that it's a lot more of just a frame and little to no structural support outside the fram. For example on Fractal one of the strongest built enthusiast cases the whole center area at the top are plastic plates to hide sound deadening material, where these old Antec's/Chieftec's the top was like 6mm thick steel riveted to the frame. The doors on these cases where nearly as heavy as most cases empty are today.
