Do you regret making the upgrade to Win10?

I guess that I do, since my laptop that I upgraded to Windows 10 had a sudden hard drive failure.

I can't really blame that on Windows 10, but upgrading it probably hastened it's demise. The upgrade broke recovery from sleep mode, so I had it running 24/7 for the past few weeks.

But, hey... I bet that I could get some good clickbait ad revenue if I posted a story on a tech blog explaining how "WINDOWS 10 KILLED MY LAPTOP!!!" 🙂
 
I upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 12 to Windows 10 Pro. Between the touchpad driver and causing a BSOD loop and Cortana's search breaking, I had to reinstall it over seven times to get a functional OS....

Or so I thought; until I noticed periodic video corruption playing full screen YouTube videos in both Firefox and Edge. I tried all the Windows 10 Intel video drivers, but none of them fixed the problem. I have gone back to Windows 8.1 and I am much happier.


More recently, I upgraded my desktop computer and decided to try Windows 10 Pro on it. Between Windows Defender updates breaking, lack of window title bar customization, having to hassle with registry edits to change settings that used to be in a GUI, the travesty that is the new Personalization Settings panel, and the broken help system, I have come to some a conclusion:

Windows 10 is free right now because it's a half-finished, buggy beta product.

I might try Windows 10 again in another eight months or so, but for a production environment Windows 10 is shite. Back to 8.1 with StartIsBack for me.

Is it Win10 that's buggy, or the drivers? There are plenty of people running it just fine (apparently 110 million)...your problem makes the Intel drivers buggy (potentially)...

This always happens with a new OS, and why I think MS is half crazy offering the free upgrade back to 7. Manufacturers are always slow to release driver updates. Maybe they think that people will just give up and buy a new computer.

On my Yoga 12: driver issues + frustrated by the other stuff.

On my desktop, just frustrated by all the regressions compared to Windows 8.1. For example, most of the help prompts I clicked on in Windows 10 would open up a browser windows with a Bing search of "How to search for help in Windows.", instead of a search for the help item in question. Or the half-finished Frankenstein abomination that is the theme manager.

And yes, I stand by my assertion that Windows 10 is not up to the quality of either Windows 7 or Windows 8 (+Win 7 Start menu) shortly after launch.

My brother upgraded his Lenovo laptop from 7 to 10 with no issues.

I have done two upgrades from 8.1 to 10 with no issues(both intel based), and to be honest all my games and software works great, no driver issues, 10 is rock solid and I can't remember last time I had a polished new OS like 10.

Probably a driver issue you have, end of the day some users will get issues and that goes for any OS you care to name.


Easy to call an OS like 10 "beta" when you don't know the cause, besides plenty of users like myself using 10 with with no issues and yes I take my stability very seriously.

Here's my list of broken programs and fixes:

Jaksta - launch error - upgrade to v6
Manycam - freeze on launch - reinstall.
Unreal - broken lighting - patch 227i
Quake4 - mouse performance - re-install Mark C acceleration fix ( good for all games )

I currently have 1 profile that 'hangs' on login ( 60 seconds )
W10 has no support for netlogon debugging ( none that I have found )

Updates and maintenance settings are a PITA.
You must go thru ALL the task manager settings to run when computer is in idle state.
Telemetry must be blocked at the firewall level.
( to keep your privacy - MS sends/logs your computer usage)
Cloud services are default - must be disabled for privacy.
And, tons of bloat " APPS " must be removed using " powershell "
Many other FORCED preferences have to be modified ( BING search ... etc )

I'm sure I will be finding more holes to fill .. as MS changes telemetry ports

I love how they're now pushing Windows 10 down regardless of if you want it or not. Started seeing it popping up on all my systems over the last few days. If you uncheck it and hide it, it comes back later selected and un-hidden.

Go to Windows Update->Installed update, remove KB3035583.

Reinstall it if you decide to upgrade.

My thoughts exactly. Windows 10 is a not a pleasure to use on a desktop. Visually, Windows 10 is a jack of all trades, with the primary focus set on a touch-enabled device with mic/camera/gps onboard (such as Surface Pro 3/4). Classic desktop out of the box experience is pretty poor. Lack of GUI customization options. The new Start menu seems to be half-finished, not enough customization and its too square, designed for touch-devices in mind. With all the fuss, they might have just one search box left for all that matters (yeah its true you can find anything / launch everything with it), so why bother with a menu at all if that can't be done properly.

I had to spend lots of time customizing GUI to suit my desktop needs. Is it really that much better than Windows 8.1? In the future yes... right now, not really. Too much hassle for so little gain (if at all). I don't even mention the telemetry / windows update part. Windows was all about customization, now they seem to be taking the Apple route. Can't blame them though.

It is free for a reason. Microsoft needs Windows 10 more than any of us does. Period. And my VISTA SP2 laptop is still running fine, no invitations to install the latest and greatest OS? I feel sad, not really.

Personally, I haven't experienced serious issues on my desktop, except for my wi-fi adapter not working straight out of the box, had to fiddle with it for a bit and occasional driver not installing correctly. Suffice to say, I didn't have any of these issues with Win 8.1. Not a big deal though. Internally, it is great though... slightly more efficient than Windows 8.1 (way more efficient than Windows 7), it's GUI, constant logging and inflexible WU that annoy me the most. Wish there was a way around it, officially.

On a more positive note, now you can have Skydrive/Onedrive with a local account (just like in Windows 7/8.0).

Yeah, I have W10 for experiments only. Too many things are going to get patched soon anyway. You guys keep testing it, making it better for us all. I hope in the next version, Cortana is going to get more usable, don't disable telemetry. Thank you very much </sarcasm>.

Loss of ATi software and driver support...
Loss of TWO printers ( Hp DeskJet 720c and Epson Stylus Rx620 )

IE11 problems....
User profile login problems ....
And, all those programs I had to fix and upgrade

Yea... I'm not willing, nor do I have the money to buy new MB and printer and graphics cards....

Total BS

2 weeks of trouble shooting ... Re-imaged back to W7pro in 22 minutes

Ghost Imaging is awesome.
 
I do not regret installing Windows 10... yet. Though I may yet revert it to Windows 8.1. I updated one of my laptops to assess it and hated it much less than I expected I would. That may have something to do with the fact I have a Pro licence and have a bit more control over it.

I find it a retrograde step in a number of ways, however. Edge is nowhere near as pleasant to use as the Metro version of IE. I really liked being able to right-click and just see those screenshot-tabs pop up along the bottom. Very fast, very convenient. And wastes no screen the rest of the time. Edge has stepped back in time to having a row of unnecessary tabs along the top of the screen. Even in tablet mode there is still a toolbar along the bottom of the screen and you get a windowed effect. And every time I open a new tab, it doesn't default the cursor to the address bar, but a search box in the middle of the page. So unimpressed with that.

Also, the first thing I did was change around ten different defaults to actually get my system the way I want it to function. Hiding that bloody search bar and turning off the default search (when you hit the Windows key) from searching online instead of just locally, were the first of those.

Storage Spaces seem to have gone mainstream. I had to dig about a bit to use them in Windows 8 and they had stability / usability issues back then. Unless improved in some fundamental ways, I'm not sure MS should be pointing the home user at those. Include them, by all means - they can be really useful. But a home user could get in trouble they might not be prepared for with those.

I also really dislike being able to just swipe through all my open programs from the left (my laptop is a touch-screen one). Instead it now shows me mini-views of them all arranged in the middle of the screen. Irksome and slower.

You also cannot mix InPrivate and normal tabs in the same browser "window" as you could with the Metro IE. Instead, the shortcut for an InPrivate tab splits the screen in two and opens up a new window. Which I then have to resize. And then to get back to the other tabs, I have to swipe and visually identify which window I want and poke it, instead of just swiping till I get to the one I want (which as it was the spawning application would normally be the first).

So summary version, I find it not as bad as I thought I would, but the defaults are terrible and the Edge browser is a significant step back from Metro IE. Obviously the defaults I changed without much trouble. I'm left deciding if Edge is poor enough that I want to bother reverting everything.

I also need to look into this telemetry issue as I have a professional responsibility for the data on that system and need to be able to trust that it's not being sent off-machine without my knowledge.
 
The edge browser can be fun if you go to a news site with lots of picture on it and use the note feature to scribble on them. :biggrin:

Same here. I literally clicked the button to upgrade, walked away, came back a little while later and it was at the Windows 10 login screen. Didn't lose anything and all my icons were even in the same place. First time that's ever happened.

I figure all the other things people are crying about will be addressed in the future, but for me it's running fine.
 
I have to say that I do regret the upgrade. Upgraded desktop and laptop. Desktop worked fine for about 6 weeks, than after an upgrade my entire profile was blown away and I had to reset every single thing on the pc to restore to where it was took hours.

On my laptop, things worked fine for a few weeks. This morning I boot it up and it says that it had a problem on shut down. Cannot yet get back into any operating system, hoping I don't have a brick on my hands. Never had an issue, now a catastrophic failure. Trying to go back to prior build, not sure if that will work.
 
Rocksolid for me. Some computers just cant handle new operating systems. better to just buy newer hardware that can handle win 10.
 
I absolutely HATE windows 10. The reasons why?

1) Windows 10 requires you to make a Windows account (outlook email) account. I don't want or need one... I know you can kinda get rid of this. But your outlook profile is still there. And yes you can get rid of that too, but, it's kinda tricky.

2) I hate apps, If it's a app, get rid of it! Now anything installed on the OS is an APP, and it wants to still look like the crappy phone interface that I hate.

3) Tiles SUCK!

4) the Start menu was / IS A JOKE! THANK GOD FOR WINDOWS SHELL!

5) IE (sucks even more!) as if it could get any worse?

It's just lame... After this semester, after school, when I don't need office (access)... I'm going to linux for good on my laptop. I hope Microsoft dies a FAST hard death and the company goes bankrupt soon.

Does anyone know when the new farcry will be out for Linux? Glad my desktop gaming rig is still on Windows 7.

Yeah...it's really easy to skip making an account. It got easier with 10, actually. Personally though, I use 3-4 Windows machines, and having settings and such span all of them easily (or be recovered) is something I enjoy.
 
I have it installed on all 4 of my machines, 3 desktops, and 1 laptop.
2 of the desktops, no problems so far.

Laptop: As much as I don't like windows 8.1, I will likely have to roll back. Since upgrading to windows 10, as soon as it's switched to battery, it locks up, and endlessly reboots, can't get in to windows while on battery power. As soon as it's plugged back in to A/C power..it's fine.

Main Desktop: Random lockups. No BSOD, but hard freezes and has to be rebooted. Never had any issues prior to Windows 10. It was freezing at the lock screen while idle. Resolved that by allowing it to go in to sleep mode, but still while in windows, getting intermittent lockups.

I do think it's better than windows 8, but still has some issues to work out.
