Do you regret making the upgrade to Win10?

I think once you start shutting off privacy features is when 10 starts complaining. I definitely had cortana off, also a whole bunch of other privacy settings. That's probably a lot of the errors I was seeing in event viewer. Because on 7 it's clean, as in no errors at all.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to privacy/tracking telemetry on Win7 for users that install all the updates, I think it's going to be a common theme since both Apple and Google have been doing it for awhile and Microsoft have jumped on the bandwagon for 10 and also with 7/8.

I installed it on my laptop and finally I decided that I did not like it. IMHO MS tried to hard to make it better than Win 7 but does not succeed.

I don't regret upgrading to Windows 10, but I do miss being able to use sleep mode on my laptop. That feature has been broken since I upgraded.

I just don't see a need to upgrade my other computers... yet. I'm sure that some oddball application will force me to upgrade a few years from now, though.

Lots of people are jumping on the "OMG, ma privacy been vierlated!!" bandwagon, forgetting that other OS's like iOS and Android and most web sites have been tracking the hell out of you for years now.

To be fair there are many factors here with privacy/spyware etc ,man's greed ie sales/profits and identifying what users like/prefer to buy etc, modern technology can help identify what users like or want, then those companies out there can focus on the interest of the users, the way the world goes round, telemetry etc is one way they can do this, business is business, for good or bad some of it is all to do with money/profits etc...

Do you think you have privacy when you leave your home, you know you really don't, way things are and virtually impossible to stop.

For good or bad just one way modern technology is used.
Then you have the security aspect of privacy which opens up another can of worms and human rights etc...
You or I could also argue for Microsoft up to a point ie telemetry helps them identify issues with the OS for the users, right or wrong the bigger picture is more complex then you think.

I'm more willing to believe that telemetry is for MS to more effectively troubleshoot problems and likely target marketing better (although as mentioned it seems they aren't doing a good job there sometimes lol), than being 'in bed' with the government as in order for that to happen they'd have to basically have all the governments of the world all agree on doing this, otherwise how would even just one dissenting one not announce it? And we all know the world governments cannot get along that well, at all!

I can sympathize with those that don't want to be surveilled as MSFT is doing, to a point. If you complain about big data and then turn around and bow before capitalism, worshiping the almighty dollar, begging for innovative technologies and experiences.... well... clearly you don't understand how capitalism works.

I'm all for reasonable limits on surveillance and usage of data gained via surveillance, but reasonable is the key word in the context of a capitalist economy. By my understanding, this "reasonable" hasn't been completely defined just yet.



To the point of the thread though, W10 is fantastic. No complaints whatsoever.

The forced updates caused me one problem - nvidia drivers on day one. A reboot fixed that, and it's been 100% fine since then. The UI...seems fine to me. But I was fine with 8.1 too. The multi-desktop features are pretty nice, the OS feels on par if not a little better than 8.1 speed wise and reliability wise it's as great as 8.1 for me.

RE: bandwidth concerns - unless you're telling me that W10 ate your mobile bandwidth, when are you living in, 1995 on a 14.4k dial up connection? My data usage from this telemetry hasn't spiked at all. I move a lot more data through gaming, downloads, streaming and such.

No regrets, I like it more than 7 and 8. Store apps could certainly do with a launch time boost (Calculator takes around a second to launch) and I wish the sped up some of the animations as well but I like it more overall.

Microsoft operating systems have had telemetry for years. The difference is most have had an off switch and 10 does only has basic and full telemetry reporting (Insiders are stuck at full, I think). As long as 7 and 8 still have the off switch, I don't think there's much to raise the level of concern.

I have everything but the most basic telemetry turned off. No discernible difference in my network logs. I do like the ability for my PCs to share updates with each other on my network, but I have the larger P2P option turned off.

Haven't been a problem for me, but my systems have actually been heeding turning off the "deliver driver updates via windows update" option. I understand not everyone's has done that. I would hope they fix that for them in the future. I have several drivers that I used older or more specific versions for than what Win 10 installed by default and it has not tried to change any of them.

Nope, turned her off.

What I do like is the cleaner look of the interface, snappier performance, DX12, better search, and did I mention better performance? Things I don't like are the disparate UIs between newer settings pages and older Win32 pages and having to turn off a billion different things on each machine for one reason or another.

It's not the drudge some are making it out to be. I'm perfectly fine with using it on all three of our machines. It has been a complete improvement over Win 7 in our case.

I upgraded to Win 10 as soon as it was available. However, the Nvidia Win 10 drivers broke some key features in madVR, which to me is essential for watching movies (which I do a lot, since I don't game).

Went back to Win 8.1 for now, and frankly there's nothing about 10 that I miss except for the slightly cleaner look. I may go back at some point in the future, but I'll wait until things settle down.

I also had issues with the initial NVidia drivers until they fixed GeForce experience which I believe was the third release and it's been fine ever since.

Need to install 10 into VMware Player and see what this crap is all about so I know how to fix things with it installed.

I won't be using 10 unless I need to and at that it would be for gaming only and on a separate partition or HDD. Will continue with 7.

I rather like it. Cleaner. I have to use Win 7 at work and find it looks childish in comparison.

The UI doesn't look very thought out though. For example, window title bars and menu bars are both white, so you can't tell exactly where the draggable area (to move a window) ends and the menu bar starts. These kind of errors were common in amateurish home-made Windows XP themes and some Linux distro's, but Microsoft has generally followed UI guidelines before.

Also the tiny (1-pixel high?) "strip" that shows whether a window is active or not is too hard to see, and this will only get worse as DPI increases.

To be fair that's Nvidia's fault, since they make the drivers for Win10 on their products.

I do have a Win10 laptop that uses Nvidia drivers and that is working fine.
My main PC has AMD Radeon drivers and again no issues with Win10.

I do think sometimes some companies rush drivers out without proper testing.

I regret spending 3 hours trying to get my worthless begging-to-be-smashed windows 8 tablet to finish the updates it needs just to get windows 10. I actually had to do a factory reset because it crashed during an update cycle and got caught in an endless loop of crashing at bootup due to an update. The stupid thing would not say which update crashed it. And it was so terribly slow it took literally 20 minutes per reboot loop for it to finally crash. I hate that thing so much it is a miracle it didnt get smashed. I will never mess with updates for it again. It is such a worthless piece of trash I really dont have words to describe how bad it is and how bad windows in general is on a tablet.

I got a cheap Windows 10 tablet and it works quite well. However I *did* brick it about 3 days after getting it. I tried to do a "Reset my PC" but it spat out an error about halfway through, then it would just show a black screen at boot. Trying to reset it again produced the same error.
No installation media, recovery partition or downloadable installation media is provided with these cheap tablets. I had to actually send it in for a re-install of Windows.
