While it is probably too harsh (and too early) to equate GWB with Hitler or Stalin, I believe that many of those who say these things are speaking out of fear. They feel that Bush has made his path clear and that it has many parallels in the history of those despots. No, Bush is not yet in the same class, but when better to sound the alarm, at the top or the bottom of "the slippery slope"? Most of us have been raised with familiar axioms like: "Those who do not study history are bound to repeat it.", "Hindsight is always 20/20.", "Make all of the mistakes you want, just don't make the same one twice.". People the world over shook their heads after WWII and asked how the German people could have been so blind. Part of the answer is that by the time they realized what Hitler was doing, they were afraid to speak out. Government repraisals were often swift and secret. There are a lot of people today that feel Bush and co. are not only removing rights, but snooping on all of the citizens to find dessent which they already refer to as unpatriotic, treason, etc.. History has shown how such a progression may end up and people are sounding the alarm. I am not yet ready to equate Bush with the despots of yesteryear, but let me add my voice to the call for alarm. Where are we going, and do we want to be there?
