Do you really need DVD burning software with Vista Ultimate?

I recently upgraded to Vista Ultimate from XP. A longtime Nero user, my v6 won't work under 64-bit Vista. I was looking at upgrading but I started wondering if I need burning software at all anymore. Under XP, I used Nero for:

1) Burning data files to DVD. I can format the DVD and just drag-and-drop files in Explorer (I just found this out - I actually wasn't aware you could do this in XP since I always used Nero).

2) Burning/Creating ISOs. This was one area where I thought I might need software but I found an ISO Recorder "power toy" that integrates into Vista's context menu. I think "Power toy" is misleading, b/c IMO that implies a relationship with MS and this tool is completely 3rd-party. But it's free, seems work, and has been vetted a bit (some versions available on download.com).

3) Burning Video. I don't really burn movies in DVD format very much, but Vista Ultimate seems to have the basic functions I would ever want for home-movie type projects.

Anything I'm overlooking, or compelling reasons to use burning software -- Nero or otherwise?

Thanks in advance.

I think a lot of folks use ImgBurn. It seems to work well and is very easy to use.

The biggest problem with freebie third-party utililities is that they often go un-updated for security issues and become vulnerable to malware attacks.

Depends on what you want to do,in my experience any OS and that includes Vista does not have great burning software just the basics which is fine if thats all you need to do,however I like to do a lot of things wih burning software so look to third party options.

Lot of the third party software options are getting bloated ie Nero,Easy Media,I find if you want something decent without the bloat then something like Ashampoo Burning Studio is fine.

Another vote for ImgBurn... That is what I have been using on all my Vista Ultimate systems (yes, I have more than 1). It even works with my 200 disk DVD+/-RW carousel (a sony vaio VGP-XL1B3).

I have used Nero and don't want to go back to it - it is too bloated. I think its better known competition is no better.

Is Imgburn good only for burning ISO files? Basically, I would like to do what OP mentioned: burn data, burn video/movies, DVD authoring/editing, and create ISO files. A HD capability for videos/movies would be a plus. Any suggestions? And while we are on this topic, any suggestions for DVD playback (SD and HD)? Of course, free is good but I could consider paying for an outstanding product.

After having some recent issues with Nero, I downloaded ImgBurn and Infrarecorder. For my needs/tastes, Infrarecorder suits me better and has worked well for me so far. I think InfraRecorder should be given a look as well.
