anytime i've gone in there, people seem to take themselves waaaaaay to seriously

it's like someone disses Bush, then the Bush supporters start a jihad against the OP

Actually I find it to be the exact opposite. I'd say the vast majority of posts are Bush/America-bashing polemics with little other purpose than to piss off people who disagree and create a circle jerk for those who agree. The irritating thing is that the general thought process behind 90% of the posters is that being extremely arrogant, patronizing, and insulting somehow makes a person right. It's more a contest to see who can post the most inflammtory rhetoric in the highest volume. I read it just to shake my head at a lot of the douches in there, but I don't really post since few people there seem like anything other than ideological trolls.

IMO, it seems to be that the side you are closer to, be it left or right, you seem to notice the other sides rhetoric posts more. If you have been following P & N since it started, it was WAAAY more conservative when the war started, and everyone that was critical of the admin at all was labeled a "tree hugger", "anti american", "un patriotic", etc. It seems to have shifted a bit to the left now, and it's probably in no small part due to how Iraq is unfolding.

The point being that BOTH SIDES engage in the type of post you comment on, and it's only normal that you will notice and/or be more annoyed by the side you don't agree with.

The degree to which I become annoyed really depends on the topic; for example, if we start talking about capitalism, taxation, social programs, I love to hear the liberals get pwned. If it has to do with foreign relations, Iraq, etc, I'll gladly stand aside and lightly support the liberals bashing the chickenhawks (I lean towards traditional conservatism in that regard, but at the moment it seems as though the Democrats are closer to that than the Republicans). If it has to do with Afghanistan, I tend to agree with most everyone that posts, because the vast majority of us are in agreement regardless of political orientation.

Well I agree that people will always have persecution complexes about the side that they oppose, but I think it's fair to say that P&N has a definite skew left, which you could measure by tallying threads and looking at poll counts (notice how Kerry/not-Bush is always way ahead of Bush in election polls, yet the real-world numbers have them a lot closer). Again, I definitely agree about the tendency to notice misbehavior on the opposition more, but I think my suspicions would be verified if you tallied up all the blatant troll posters (as in someone who fills every post with inflammatory rhetoric) by side.

The trolls can be ignored with some patience, but what bothers me more is how a lot of the irritating venom has pervaded its way even into legitimate discussion (e.g. try to find a standard Iraq discussion post without a dozen inflammatory buzzwords like "neocons" and "chickenhawks" and general patronzing remarks). It just gets old, and it's hard to even pay attention to anything else when you keep seeing that stuff. Truth be told everytime I see that, I just totally skip the post and hope the next poster can make a point without the ad homs.

As do I. I don't even bother posting there any more except to get a sentence in here and there; it's become a wasteland of trolls, including a number of members for whom I used to have a great deal of respect.

No such thing as "Respect" when it comes to Politics, just ask Rummy.
