In cofffee places...I'll give a little change if I sked for something complicated. Normally I'm they're just pouring me a large cup of house coffee and I see no reason.

I usually put in the change from the bill. At some places, where the employees really go out of their way, I might leave a buck.

I work the to-go food counter at a relatively high-profile restaurant, and I can say for the amount of work I do, I deserve more tips.

Granted, if you come to me and order a dessert or something relatively inexpensive and/or easy to prepare that's one thing.

But a couple weeks ago, some bastard ordered 24 filet mignons TO GO. I had to spend about 30 minutes at the line expediting the order, packing them up, and preparing other elements of the order which totaled $698. The f00 who picked up the order tipped me exactly ZERO dollars.

But then again there are those who tip $5-6 on a $30 order which isn't too shabby.

Tips should be commensurate with the amount of work I do for YOUR particular order. No, I am not OWED tips but society dictates that tips should be left out of courtesy. A dollar, two dollars, or even the change from a bill is fine -- it's something and it adds up.

Truthfully I wouldn't even expect it if your order is routine. I'm just doing my job. However, there are people who insist on trying to order me around like they run the restaurant, or insist on getting boatloads of extra this and extra that at no additional charge or are just stupid or general nuisances, and they are obligated to tip just for being a burden to society.

i wholeheartedly agree, that's why i make it a point to not ask for anything out of the ordinary. i have a friend who *always* asks for all this extra crap though, and it pisses me off, because it's embarrasing.

It depends on the quality of service. If it's good (i.e. friendly and dont mess up my order), I'd tip 20%. Otherwise, 10 - 15%.
And for the guy who ordered 24 filet mignons for $698, he'd probably gone broke after paying for the order, that's why he didn't give any tip, hehehe... $29 bucks for a filet mignon is expensive to me, I have only one buck left for tip, j/k

I don't put any tips in the "tip jar". I'll tip waiters/waitresses, the pizza guy, the haircut lady, the car wash people, but that's about it.

It's just that those tip jars are so impersonal. How do I know where those tips will be going?

At a bar I'll drop my change into the tip pitcher for the bar tender. Some nights it'll amount to $.50, other nights it'll be $5.00.

I won't do it at coffee shops for gopunk's reason, but I'll definitely leave tips at bars and especially car wash places.

If you don't tip at bars........ I want to know your secret on getting drink #2, cuz at the places I go... if you don't tip, they serve EVERYONE around you, then maybe get around to pouring you a foamy beer or a poorly mixed drink.

Damn picky bartenders

At the end of the day, the people working divide them up before they go home.

No, cause they always have a jar next to it for some local that was molested by a goat and needs severe reconstructive surgery or something of that sort. And I don't have enough money for both, but if I put money in one jar and not in the other, then what does that say?
