I usually tip at Coldstone (ice cream, I usually don't go to coffee houses). I love to hear the employees sing. :)

No. I have yet to see a place with a tip jar that actually had service to warrant a tip. Handing me the food over a counter is not service enough to warrant a tip. Now, if I went to a place at which my food was served to me but the tips were collective (ie shared equally among all servers), I would still not put a tip in the jar, rather I would subtly slip the server the money. No sense to me in having the good servers support the bad ones.

<< It's just that those tip jars are so impersonal. How do I know where those tips will be going? >>

MYTH #1: Waiters get all of your tip. Tip jars don't go to people at the counter.

Most waiters have to split tips with the bussers, the bar, the food runners, and the kitchen. That's a total of 30% of their tips going to other people.
If you tip someone at the counter, it goes to the people serving you and that's it.
