and where are you from? apparently most of the US pronounces them the same.

in ohio we pronounce them distinctly - cot = caht and caught = cawt.

I voted yes but I think it's actually no. Grew up in CT. Cot is like hot, but with a C. Caught is like cawt or something - a little extra "aw".

Off the cuff I would have said I pronounce them the same, but after thinking about and saying them a few times there is a subtle difference. I always find these questions weird. The initial reaction is: oh yeah I know what I do. Then you start questioning if that is true. Then you start to wonder if your awareness of the question is effecting your pronunciation.

cot is much sharper and the t is accented, caught is longer and the o is much deeper.

That seems like a southern drawl thing, but I'm in GA and everyone I know pronounces "cot" and "caught" the same (rhymes with "hot").

Oh yeah, as for where I'm from. I was born in Connecticut, spent some time in Virginia, but have primarily grew up and lived in south central Wisconsin. I've pretty much always lived in the "different" zone.
