oddly it seems like south ohio does that too, but not here up by the lake.

Weird - I've been with a Reserve unit in Southern Ohio and everywhere we've been, I have still only ever heard how we normals say "cot." Which is to say, I've been many places on that map and have still only heard cot the exact same way, everywhere. No deviation. This map suggests otherwise, and I find that really weird.

Yeah I guess so. According to that map it shouldn't cause Michigan is quite red, especially downstate here. But it sounds the same to me when I do.

I think the idea is that it's the word 'caught' that people say differently.

Pretty much. I have an American accent. I used to wonder if I had an accent but the skinny is, everyone has an accent... EVERYONE!

Stephen Hawking's complaint about his voice synthesizer was that it gave him an American accent. His complaint became known and a lot of famous people offered their help in giving him a more satisfactory accent (the youtube video can be found, I watched it!), but he evidently rejected them all.
