Do you pay your state's use tax?

This is more of a general question, so I figured it would make a good standalone topic as opposed to a post within the 2007 tax thread.

AFAIK, all states have a "use tax" that requires you to pay sales tax on purchases made online, assuming the merchant didn't already charge you sales tax. Given that this is a computer hardware website and many people here make lots of purchases online, I was wondering how many of you actually report this tax?

I only ask because in many of the online hot deals I read about on here and other websites like FW, someone will usually remark "good deal because there's no sales tax". I was just wondering if they really don't report that tax, or what.

Nope. Oregon doesn't have a use tax since we don't have a sales tax (and thank goodness for that).

I also buy gas and cigarettes from my local indian reservations. Hell will freeze over before I ever claim that on my taxes.

Yes, I do. I don't want the public to see my name in the paper for failure to pay required taxes, if I were to be audited.

Wouldn't be the IRS that comes after him. Sales and use taxes are administered at the state/county/local level.

Yes, I do pay use tax. However, I am the only individual that I know of who does, and I'm a state and local tax accountant. :)

Most individuals will never encounter use tax unless they buy a car or boat in one state and bring it into another state to be registered. State DORs will automatically assess use tax in such situations.

Businesses, on the other hand, get audited all the time, and many do a decent job of accurately accruing and remitting their use tax.

New York's Gov. Spitzer is pushing hard for all New Yorkers to pay tax on every internet transaction. He wants the revenue to continue with our government's policy of take-take-take and then they spend-spend-spend.

The Associated Press

NY Wants Online Sales Tax

Feb 12, 2008

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? Amazon.com is fighting Gov. Eliot Spitzer's plan to require online companies to collect sales tax from shoppers in New York, whether the companies are in New York or not.

Several other money-strapped states have mulled going after the taxes.

Spitzer's proposed budget would require Internet giants like Amazon to collect tax on an estimated $47 million in sales to New Yorkers, who are currently required by an honor system to report how much they spend online on their tax returns.

Amazon spokesman Paul Misener says the governor's plan would be a radical departure from anything currently being done in the U.S.

He says other states ? including California, Michigan, North Carolina and Texas ? have considered similar plans, but abandoned the idea.
