own one, but only because of inheritence. Not something I would go spend a bunch of money on to acquire. Bullets, water storage, and food are a better investment if the SHTF

I have some 50 cent pieces I gold plated myself, all courtesy of Northwestern College for the use of their gold . Actually I have no real interest in gold nor would I care to buy it.

I will be buying Gold next week. Dental Gold!!

My right molar broke in two last night!

$750 crown (my fourth one)

There goes my coin money

Nope.

I could see maybe owning Greek or Roman coins from BC just to have a piece of history but I haven't bothered to buy any other ancient artifacts.

For the collapse of civilization you'd want guns, ammo, food, meds and power armor not shiny metal.

and persian! i just bought a silver siglos from the time of king darius (~500 BC) for ~100$. persian coins look awesome and they are cheaper because they're not as popular as greek/roman.

ancient indian, scottish, and british coins are also on my list of ones to acquire someday.

How do you know it's not fake? Chinese can fake anything. Alibaba even has fake Silver Eagles.

Silver is more volatile and better to make a quick buck from it.

I recently flipped silver and made $600 profit. So I bought a new Dyson to clean the carpet with.

I like the idea of coins, gold and silver, but realistically if the sht hts the fan a can of dog food or a shotgun shell will have more value.
I kinda feel the same. I'd consider investing in some gold and/or silver, but if SHTF happens then like you said, I'd think a barter-type economy will be used, at least for awhile.

But, I guess I can see gold and/or silver being a worthwhile investment but only for a rule-of-law scenario or economic-downturn and not collapse. In that case, the dollar might be worth shit but precious metals will still be worth something.

it is a possibility, but this one was nowhere near EF condition or better, which is what they usually create fakes for. had a big banker's mark cutting right through the middle of it, and i could see it was solid through that.

it is also a pretty cheap coin even in better conditions. they are much more likely to fake more expensive/well-known coins.

i always compare the coins against images/descriptions of known variations (using a site like wildwinds and coin history/research books) to make sure that it is a type that has been seen before. and i only deal with sellers with a good reputation on vcoins, vauctions, or at local shops. and when looking over the coin i look for any signs of fakes (seams, pitting, etc)

still there is the off chance that i could be fooled. if so, i guess ignorance is bliss 🙂 i am not getting these to resell or anything like that.

if i ever in the market for more expensive coins, i probably will consider getting one graded by PCGS.

This is atot. Most people here probably own vaults in a secret location filled with gold ingots and M3s.

No gold here, other than a very small amount I found as a kid while breaking quartz rock. It may not even be real gold. No clue what I even did with that rock, I think my parents have it holding books up on a shelf. lol

Leave it to the Chinese to try to fake coins in massive quants. 😡

Anyway, there are various tests including magnetism, condition, weight, acid (for junk silver), but most importantly REPUTATION of the seller.

Quartz gold must have been a nice find.
