The only thing I do differently is to pirate less. I haven't been keeping up with the current popular artists.

why does laptop vs desktop matter in piracy of music?
Disk space?

ahh true, I guess then. I wasn't looking at it from carrying all your 'booty' with you.

don't modern laptops handle over 25,000 songs though even with OS + typical apps?

I have a laptop from work, I use it mainly as my MP3 and web server at work, I use a desktop at home and work for everything else.

Very difficult to generalize. It's like trying to say some car will last so many miles ... there are many factors.

The big question is how many external disks can be attached to the laptop when it's a person's only pc - and who wants to always deal with usb speeds...

Laptop, have had a D620 for 2 years now and will be keeping it another 2 years. It's a great computer and I haven't actually felt the need or desire for a desktop, I don't play any games anyway so it doesn't matter. I did upgrade the RAM recently though, but that was $40, so not a big deal. The only other change was for the hard drive, however that was partly because I needed an external drive for backups.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 now, and I had an IBM ThinkPad T42p, a T30, and a T20 before that!

Lenovo still builds the ThinkPad T series laptops like little tanks... just the say they should be. I haven't seen anything from Dell or HP that compares.

I was a pro desktop, anti-laptop guy until I had to get one for college ... since then its become my primary PC (the desktop I built a few years ago is my sister's now).

I just recently switched to a Lenovo T61P as my primary machine. Had gone through 4 desktops before this.
So far so good. The physical freedom offered by a laptop is great. You do sacrifice a bit of power but frankly aside from some very specific uses like gaming or video encoding, few people actually need more power than already available in higher end laptops.

IMHO if you have the cash the laptop is the best choice...*today* you can buy something that can do it all...add whatever keyboard/mouse/screen you want at home, but *tomorrow* you usually can't upgrade (even if the video card is upgradable).

I like to stay about 1-2 generations back on CPU / Video tech. With a desktop I can do this pretty cheaply. With a laptop not...however I use my laptop for mostly travel so it's not a big deal I can't play games / do graphics on the road.

Since I stopped being a hardcore PC gamer about 4 years ago, the desktop had to go. My first notebook was an Inspiron 6000D with a 128MB X300. I played a lot of stuff on it and it was great. Sure you don't get super fancy graphics, but I'm generally more interested in the actual gameplay.

My MBP with it's 128MB GF8600GT-m is a huge leap and plays anything I throw at it now. Currently playing the RA3 beta. Again, I can't play with everything turned up but I just don't care.

My wife has been using laptops for about 5 years now. She has hers and I have mine. We have two desktops in the house, one Vista MCE box that is the full-time DVR in the house and another less powerful box that i do BT on so I don't clutter the HTPC.

Most people greatly over-exaggerate their needs and think they HAVE to have a desktop. While there's definitely still a market segment for it, the ability to take your laptop everywhere you go (and I do) greatly outweighs any benefit you get from a desktop, unless you have a specific need for it, IMHO.

I have a work-issued Lenovo Thinkpad T61. It's ok, I prefer my desktop at home.
