I was listening to King's X on the way to work this morning

don't get me wrong, and I have seen them do a show which was one of the best shows I've seen, and I listen to them frequently, but they ain't metal. Hard rock yes, metal no.

King's X has their metal moments (Moanjam probably being the heaviest of them), but I agree that they're more rock than everything. When people call them progressive metal they're really stretching the borders of both terms. Great band, still.

Been listening to a lot of Dream Theater lately..

There's plenty out there, you just aren't looking hard enough. 😉

Oh, I'm looking... All the usual places that always have good recommendations just have me thinking 'is that it?'. I've found basically two metal bands in the past ~decade that I like, Opeth & Amon Amarth... (yeah Opeth has been around but I only discovered them a few years back) ... a few others that are listenable, Arch Enemy, In Flames, Trivium... I don't consider a band like DT metal, that's rock to me (and they're excellent, but I digress). There's certainly no Iron Maiden of the 2000s though. With a lot of the bands I see recommended, such as Meshuggah, ISIS, Krisiun, I can appreciate the talent but there's just no mental hookup anymore. I feel like I'm studying for an exam rather than listening to music, and when I'm done I have no desire to listen to most of it again. *shrug*

If you like Iron Maiden, try Slough Feg's Traveller. You can't go wrong with an American power metal concept album based on a table-top sci-fi RPG. A bit of Thin Lizzy to their sound, too, melody-wise.

The other solution is to forget about new bands and just explore deeper into the underground of 80's/early 90's metal.

I was just listening to Reign In Blood and Beneath The Remains this morning during my run.

There is very little recent metal I actually like, I stick with the older stuff.

KT
Funny, I'm sticking with the older stuff as well and I listened to Reign in Blood during my morning run too.

Why is it always the Metal fans that have threads like this? Same on other forums I visit. I never see a "Pop" thread, or "Rap" thread, etc. lol

I prefer the a different style of metal than your standard thrash stuff.(which I still do like)

Opeth of course, Kalmah.. oh and even though they aren't totally metal, Porcupine Tree is excellent.

My buddies up in Dallas were not that impressed with Maiden, said that they played almost all new stuff.

I came back to Louisiana to hang out and go to the Houston show. We missed the Dream Theater set b/c some people don't know how to plan shit. I'm just glad I saw DT in Orlando last year....

The Iron Maiden set was somewhat disappointing. I've been a longtime fan but never seen them in concert. They played mostly new stuff and Bruce seemed like he was "off" on vocals. This tour is NOT for the casual fan.

It is such a classic album and perfect running music, though it's hard to avoid banging my head sometimes.

Not sure on classifications but for newer metal I really like Isis, Mastodon, Baroness, and The Sword (Sword is a bit repetitive, but still enjoyable). Does anyone like Gojira? I freaking love Gojira.

Because people who are into metal are really passionate about it. If you go to a metal show it's basically like one big family of insane people. Plus metal is very diverse; the amount of sub-genres is basically infinite.

I prefer Krysta Cameron. 1/3 growl, 1/3 scream, 1/3 clean

Ugh, that was awful.. and I'm a pretty hardcore metal head.

These are the bands I like:

Iced Earth
Demons & Wizards
Blind Guadian
Dark Tranquillity
Arch Enemy
Amon Amarth
Nightwish
Dream Theater
Metallica

Any recommendations? I need a new band!

Edit: I also find it sad that I'm the only one who has mentioned Iced Earth[that I saw]. Been following them for over 10 years now.. met the band when they were in Albuquerque in 2008. Great guys, amazing music and attitude! Matt Barlow has one of the most powerful, emotional metal voices around, IMO.

If you want something that has elements of all of the bands you listed, Wintersun is excellent melodic death/power metal
