Do you memorize hot keys or use the Menu?

If I can hit the hot-key easily with my left-hand, I use the hot-keys. Since that usually means holding down the Ctrl or Alt key with another key, that means nothing farther than the C key and only as high as the A. Copy and Select All are the most commonly used commands for me. If I have my right hand on the mouse selecting text, usually my left hand is resting on the keyboard waiting to type something else, so it's close to the keys. If I'm using the mouse and my left hand isn't particularly near the keyboard, I use the right-click menu. Too much moving back and forth to use hot-keys with my right hand.

Hot keys most of the time.

I still can't believe how many people don't know that Ctrl-O in a web browser will open a new page. It just blows me away. 😀

Using a menu option (or just clicking the address bar and typing it in), or clicking an icon is less work than a hotkey if your hand is already on the mouse and all you're doing is clicking through sites. How many people browse the web by keeping their hands on the keyboard?

Hot keys. Whenever I wanna go to a URL I have CTRL L imprinted into my brain.

At work I use mostly mainframe ALL text (no mouse) systems so you get really handle with the ALT and CTRL keys.

Like Lord Evermore said, if I can do the hot-key combo with my left hand (and I remember it), then I use the hot-keys.

I don't use hot keys of click menus ... I use keyboard to go to the menus ... heck, I remember them, so its pretty quick. Like I press 'alt-f' then s to save, or 'alt-f' and x to exit.

There's so many cool tricks using the windows (stolen Open Apple) key. I just don't have the brain capacity to remember them all. ANyone know of a site that documents them all?

It's often quicker for me to use the mouse. I have a horrible memory. Anyways isn't there a REASON they made the mouse? Perhaps I'm just "old-fashioned".

I have watched people do this at the WinNT login screen...

1. Orient hands/fingers on home keys.
2. Grab mouse with right hand and click in the Username text box.
3. Orient hands/fingers on home keys.
4. Type in username.
5. Grab mouse with right hand and click in the Password text box.
6. Orient hands/fingers on home keys.
7. Type in password.
8. Grab mouse with right hand and click the OK button.

Ugh!

How about...

1. Orient hands/fingers on home keys.
2. Type in username, [TAB], password, [ENTER].

I worked tech support in a previous life. We had to know all the keyboard equivalents. Specially when people call in and say their mouse doesn't work.

Hotkeys!.. I try to avoid the mouse as much as possible.

people you don't have to click OK when logging in.. just hit enter! 😉 (perhaps this should have gone in the pet peeves thread)
