I was about to take a nice new job but there are some family issues going on and I want to be helpful.

Oldest kid lives nearby (her 5-yr-old developed a nasty medical problem)

Older son and wife are divorcing in Oregon

Younger daughter is in VA,

Younger son lives with me

My parents' families are in Ohio cousins, aunts & uncles are aging.

Great question. Most of my family is spread all over the country. Its difficult to reach anybody except through phone. But at the end its all gonna be ok -- as long as nothing bad happens.

As you experienced already: With any bad issue even a small distance is gonna be a big problem at the end. So i just cross fingers... and wish you good like with the 5yr. :)

There's only 1 house between where I live and the in-laws.... When I need tools and stuff I have a key and go grab what I want LOL

I found their garage to be my favorite gas station for my mower

I'd set traps for the likes of you. Don't ever touch my tools.

In laws .25 miles
Parents and Bro 3 miles..opposite directions
Sis 7 hours but you can't get there from here...pan handle of Fla.

My parents live 15 minutes away. My brother lives about an hour away (in the city). Most of my mom's family still lives in the general area where they grew up, about an hour away from us. My dad's family is spread all over the country.

My dad is 400 miles away.

The rest of my relatives are clustered in various places and are this far away:
1400 miles
1200 miles
1800 miles
5000 miles

Currently we're in the same town. I think a distance of about 150-300 miles is ideal for most family. That is far enough that nobody will be up in anyone else's business, but close enough that a weekend trip isn't unreasonable.

I live about 1.5 hours from my parents and 2 of my brothers. Another brother lives in Wyoming, one sister lives in Alabama, and the other sister lives in London.

About 180 miles from my parents. Still only visit them once or twice a year. We weren't very close. Ever. Brother is about 1200 miles away. Haven't seen him in approx 2 years.

I've been about 2700 miles away for the last 8 years. We are going to be about 1.5 hours away in a couple of weeks. We'll see how it goes.

Nope. Nearest family consists of an uncle, aunt, and two cousins, and they're a thousand miles away. My dad lives a couple thousand away. Have some family in Mexico and Russia (although the former isn't by blood and the latter relatively distant family).

Most of my extended family still lives in the UK. I have a few relatives in Alberta and South Carolina. The rest live fairly close to Toronto. My aunt is probably the furthest at 3hrs. Most of my close by relatives are ironically the ones we never speak to.

Used to live very close to a lot of relatives 50+ within 50 km, now 2 closest are 100 km, 3 more 400 km away and the rest in Europe

Thank Gawd...NO.

We're the "old folks" in the family, even though my Brother-in-law is older than we are...
Our kids are scattered across the country.
No family within several hundred miles...Just the way we like it.

everybody is pretty close, like max 3 hours away is the furthest.
I don't know most of my extended family though.

You need the job, you take the job.

As far as family - maybe it's different for guys... But here, we do one summer picnic/cookout somewhere in the vicinity of Independence day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. That's it for scheduled face to face time. Add incidental visits, and you get about a week a year. Which - oddly enough - appears to be roughly the amount of time any of us can tolerate each other. :D

Yep. We're the "stop by and talk for 5 minutes once per month" kind of group. I like it.
