does anyone here live in excess? by excess i mean the posh swanky style that most can only afford in their dreams.

the big house, no, multiple houses, or a fancy high-rise apartment! the luxurious cars! the private servanthood and butlertude paying attention to your every whim! the long cruises and excursions in exotic locales! the wanye manor parties! the race horses and jockeys!

i have never remotely lived like this, but it is my goal. if even for a day.

No, and it is not my goal. If I ever had that kind of money I would never live that way.
My brother married into a Forbes 500 family, and his in-laws could live that way in a heartbeat, but they don't. I respect that more than anything in the world.

If some were to see how I live they would call me a Prince.

If some were to see how I lived they would call me a pauper.

I'd say yes to some extent. I could easily be living in a much smaller house, and take the bus to work but I live in a 1100sqft home, have a car, buy myself toys here and there, buy some other unnecessary things etc. I know how to control myself though. If I don't have the cash on hand, I don't spend it. But perhaps instead of taking that 2000k saved up and building a new computer, I could be putting it on the mortgage, or something. But you have to treat yourself sometimes. ;)

a 2000k$ computer? in canadian dollars no less!

Everything cost's more here. A motherboard is like 200 bucks, cpu is close to a grand, so it adds up. With my luck I usually end up with DOA parts and I don't feel like waiting 2 months for a replacement so I usually just order a replacement.

My last machine cost me about $1,700 to build. Got lucky, no DOA parts other than the ram and ram is about the cheapest computer part.

I did once but not any more is not a comedy option. I had a posh life style as a child till the communist took everything away from my family at the end of the Vietnam War.

not even close

if I were to ever become part of the "1%," I would spend money on food, better computer hardware, and traveling to interesting places

I would not care about buying status items

Buying latest consumer hardware and travelling cost only a small change for the 1%.

Their 'serious' purchases are more along the likes of upmarket upholstery, luxury cars, real estates, etc.

Not even close. I just want enough money to retire. Nothing fancy, just get me through life without a struggle and without the NEED to work.

I have a fairly low-average salary, and I pay quite a bit a month in rent because I don't want a room mate. Besides my pet of course. I still manage to put some savings away every month, and never touch my savings. Although I'm going to take a few grand soon and invest it in some stocks that pay dividends, hopefully to reinvest and grow my money.
