@NS1.....what area is constantly threatened by hurricanes?


Hurricanes are the best natural disaster possible. You see it coming for days. Looks where we live...Socal. You can have an earthquake take you out with no warning.

In the mid-west...Tornados and floods can take you out instantly......
 
Of far greater interest...Why are trailer parks such strong tornado magnets? Those dammed things seem to attract tornadoes like nothing else...
It's almost unheard of for a tornado to touch down anywhere that it doesn't tear up at least one trailer park...😛
 
Hurricanes usually frequent the nicest places on earth to live. Unless you are in a ghetto, you don't really need to evacuate usually. If you are on an island, usually you have a second home you can go to for a mini vacation until it passes.

Most of the hurricanes are just media sensationalism.
 
The only place I can think of that has hurricanes just about every season is Bermuda. They seem to be in the equivalent of hurricane alley.

Where I live we get hurricanes often . I live about 45 miles inland off the coast of NC and about 60 miles south of cape Hatteras, poor lighthouse has seen its share of hurricanes yet still stands. If you are not in a area prone to flooding and you don't have things that are likely damaged by high winds (tall trees, roof issues) , hurricane damage can be pretty low.

friend of mine lives in galveston right behind the hotel where all the media was staying during ike. he lost a couple shingles and his fence. and that's in a mid-century house.

Despite dangling freely out there in the wind, The end of America's Wang has been ***remarkably*** lucky. South FL has the distinction of being the highest risk for a hit and the most ill-prepared citizenry ratio.

Last little blow we had (CAT1 Wilma) took every traffic light and power pole. We bitched and bitched until our power was back on and the traffic returned to normal. Then we continued to be dumb. Note that they bandaid fixed the power poles, so the next little blow will also take every one of them.

Ummm no. Bermuda is hit fairly infrequently, compared to the Carribean and the upper Gulf coast.
 
Yeah Bermuda does not get hit with frequency coinciding with constant abuse. 😛

Before Igor there was Fabian in 2003. Fabian was a lot worse. Even so the buildings are stone and can take high winds much better than houses made of timber on the continents. Also storm surges can flow around the island whereas on continents they can "pile up" significantly in gulfs, bays, and estuaries, etc.

Blizzards aren't shit compared to when I was a kid. Guess it helps that most people have snow blowers, and the road crews are better equipped these days.
 
You idiots don't know shit about hurricanes. Unless you live on a barrier island, then they're AWESOME. You get a couple days off work/school to sit around and read, drink beer, and watch the weather channel. Unless it's a cat 4 or 5, only the actual beach, i.e. the sandbar between the mainland and the ocean, is usually fucked up by a hurricane.

I've lived through 20 hurricanes, probably, and consider them a net positive. They're a rainy vacation. You just have to make sure to get to the grocery store to stock up on food/beer/water.

That's only necessary if 1). you live on the beach, or 2) you live pretty close the beach and it's a cat 4 or 5. I've never boarded up my windows, or evacuated.

Like I said, it's a freaking rainy vacation.

Seattle is close enough to fault lines. There are very minor earthquakes frequently, and they've been predicting a massive one for a long time. Apparently we're "overdue".

Plus you have to deal with Seattleites, which is far worse than any natural disaster.

true. It's hot/humid as fuck in Hurricane land. something LA just doesn't understand. :\

We do things "slower" to compensate. The thing I like about serious hurricanes that tear the shit out of everything, is that everyone re-adjusts their life for about a week. There's a lot more community work, people actually become much friendlier (well, in my experience) as they deal with removing trees, clearing roads, helping each other with power issues, etc...

This. I have ridden out many, many hurricanes when I was still living in Mobile. Most of the prep we did was to stock up on fuel for our generator, make sure the chain saw was in working order, and stock up on beer to make sure somebody else does the hard work with the chainsaw for us while we sit back and enjoy ourselves once the rain stops.
