i lived in kansas for a year...tornadoes can suck my balls. that shit is random and scary as fuck if you have to deal with it(fortunately i didnt). ill take a hurricane any day of the week.

You get used to it eventually. While they arent 100% predictable, they are completely random popups either. You generally know atleast a little in advance.

Hell, i grew up in KS (about 16ish years) and never really had a nearby tornado. Sure there were plenty of warnings, but you get used to it.

Now that im in school in Florida, I wouldnt mind experiencing a hurricane

Except hurricanes tend to spawn pretty much all of that besides a blizzard. Tornado's especially farther inland where the outer bands swing out, twirl some stuff around, bang..tornado.

The reality though is that unless you live on the coast, or in a rather low lying area, and a decently built house, then most hurricanes will basically just give you a fair amount of rain and some wind.

Thing is you have fair warning with a Hurricane. A thunderstorm that spawns Tornadoes, winds, and mudslides...:(

Blizzards are not that bad and would not really compare them with natural disasters that do actual damage every time like those listed.

A bit of snow is nothing compared to a tornado or earthquake.

this, even those once a 100 year blizzards don't do shit compared to any other natural disaster

Hurricanes don't hit every year. I've lived in Florida for more than 35 years, both on the coast and in Orlando. I've ridden out @ 14 hurricanes. Only 1 of those was a direct hit where the eye passed over my house; hurricane Charley in 2003 where we had winds up to 115 mph.

With hurricanes you know they are coming and can plan accordingly. With earthquakes there is no warning so if a big one does hit and you're in the wrong place, you are fuuu'd.

Yeah, but you still live in Florida... :p

No area in the world if free of natural disasters. That is the price we pay for living in this planet. Think about it:

West Coast- Hurricanes(Not very often), wildfires, quakes.
Rockies: Blizzards, quakes
Plains: Tornadoes!
North:Blizzards, terrorist.
South: Floods, hurricanes, sinkholes, heat
Southwest: HEAT, HEAT, HEAT, immigration
Northwest: Rain, snow and Canadians.

LOL :D

There really isn't much to speak of in Arizona/New Mexico. Arizona has heat and flash floods. New Mexico has flash floods and heat in the south. The north is high desert, and is pretty benign. Extreme cold/snow would probably be the biggest natural disaster? No earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes, hurricanes... Pretty safe overall.

That said, I'll take Portland and it's windstorms & earthquakes to this shithole anyday. :p

Igor is affecting ME now. However we can move the house anywhere we choose. :p

p.s Charley was 2004. ;)

Well, here's hoping you weather the storm!

I've spent a fair amount of time in Maine and while it has many great attributes (way more than Florida) I can honestly say I'm glad I don't live there. ;)

1. Terrorists are not "natural disasters."
2. Much of the Northeast if reasonably immune to natural disasters. Blizzards are not disasters; merely annoyances.

I'm picturing that Pixar movie with the old man and the 1,000 helium balloons.

Anyone want to do the calcs on how much helium would be needed to hoist 90,000 tons?!

A manager of a data center in Virgina told me they were considered disaster free until 09/11. Then they changed the terminology to natural disaster free.

You want to see a place that gets storms? Visit Iceland!

Well, adverse weather may not be a natural disaster but I'd bet it kills more people each year than earthquakes do in this country...by far.

iceland was rather dissapointing climate wise.

I was in Vestmannaeyjar in 2000 and storm after storm hit some comparable to CAT3 hurricane strength. There's only one manmade sound I've heard that can compare to the thunderous crash of tens of thousands of cubic meters of water crashing into the rocky shoreline in such conditions. Space shuttle launch.

Ice storms are the thing to watch out for as they tend to cause the power outages but thankfully I can't remember the last time the power went out here during the winter.

Heck, the power has gone out 2-3 times during rain storms this spring / summer and it causes a bit of interference more for the dish tv so I would vote for them. ;)

I didn't say adverse weather wasn't a natural disaster, just that generally, blizzards don't count as natural disasters. Hurricanes - major damage - in the billions of dollars.

Also, while I agree that weather kills more people than earthquakes, I disagree with the "cause" of many people's deaths. "Bad weather blamed for accident on the interstate that kills 3 people." Bullshit. Bad driving killed 3 people - driving too fast for road conditions, etc. The only way "bad weather" causes an accident is if a tornado drops down out of the sky & goes down a road.

yea ice storms can cause damage but they dont remove entire towns from the map like, hurricanes, tornado's, fires and mudslides, last big ice storm was in 98 iirc

Hurricanes are one of the better natural disaster as you have a pretty good idea of where it is going to hit in enough time to get out of the way. I have never experienced an earthquake or a blizzard, but I imagine those buggers are nasty as well. The blizzard is somewhat predictable, so I can see how one can dodge those.

When you find a place that lacks natural disasters, let me know...

To answer your question, I stayed for so long in a hurricane prone area because of friends, family and the fact that I grew up there.

you don't dodge blizzards ....

The only hurricane that really fucked shit up in our area was Ivan. Frederick was pretty bad but that was before my time.

What he said. Especially about the northeast. A blizzard isn't a disaster - we're used to snow, and if more than expected is coming, we usually have advance warning.

Even living in the DC area now, with the ridiculous winter we had last year, I didn't even have any damage. I was a little worried about the weight of the snow on my porch awning and carport, but they held.

Had I still lived further north, I'd probably own a roof rake to take care of that anyway.

That's why you should live in Seattle. No regular natural disasters. The only thing to worry about is a tsunami or a motherf'ing volcano. If you're going to go out, better go out in style

Yeah, because it's so easy to move your house when a major hurricane is threatening...

Nope, but you can board it up in most cases and leave the area if you think it might be bad enough.
Much better than being buried under lava, rock and ash.

I lived on the Gulf Coast, and in the PNW.
Seeing Mt. St. Hellens blowing off steam and viewing firsthand the destruction caused by it's explosion is a whole lot more unnerving than watching a hurricane roll in.
