The honest truth is that I don't know. I think the biggest question mark for me is the food I consume: is my diet sustainable? I'm not sufficiently familiar with the shipping and growing practices with most of what I eat. I get to work via public transportation, I'm not a shopper, I don't consume excessive amounts of anything...

A few years from now, yeah, I can safely say I will be. We're moving to a place where we'll be able to have goats, chickens and gardens, removing my food question mark.

6 acres when we relocate. Not as much as I'd like to have some day, but enough of a start for the two of us. Log home with solar and (if we can get permits for it) hydro power. Masonry heater inside instead of fireplace/woodstove/electric/gas heating. The property is riverfront, so we'll be able to fish for salmon in season. We'll also be raising rabbits, since they're easier to raise as eating animals than are chickens.

To be honest though, the reason for doing this isn't overwhelming concern for the environment. It's because I have no faith in the supply chain that sustains our economy right now. One natural disaster that cuts off supply routes and a city starves to death. It seems stupid not to be self-sustaining, relying on the chance that nothing will ever affect your supply chain.

Not even close. When I was a kid we could have been close. We had a little farm in the woods where we grew lots of food. Had the cold war gone south or something similar, we could have survived well enough.

Now, however, I do not own any property and am therefore unable to farm anything. I would love to have a house with a lot of land. I wouldn't mind some solar power either, but it rains so much here that I don't know if I could sustain myself reasonably. If we can start getting 80-90% efficiency in solar power, it might be possible.

Well, let's agree that there are a few of you that don't contribute to a very important question that impacts every person on our planet. I do own the planet (in a metaphical sense).

The question is tricky because it assumes humans perpetually use the same resources. In truth, humans are pretty resourceful and will often resort to alternatives when their first choice is no longer an option (such as oil).

In any case, the human population has skyrocketed. For most of our existence on this planet, we consisted of small populations. Even then, we caused extinction of big game animals. Now, by destroying habitats, we are causing extinction of many many species. Destroying large amounts of biodiversity, that took 4.5 billion years of pure luck and evolution, on what could very well be the only life sustaining planet in the universe should be universally considered a SIN.
