There are many people who eat just like everyone else and no matter what they do, are just doomed.

Fewer than 2% of those who are fat are that way due to physical conditions like thyroid disorders and the like. They rest are doomed (like all of us), just not predisposed to being fat. Our culture that has shifted blame away from the actor and towards damned near everything else is to blame for the other 98%. Its hard for me to maintain my weight even though I exercise 3x a week and do some yoga. What I get pissed about is the fact that even though I work hard at it, my tax dollars go to those who do not.

My guess is that until women reach a critical mass here, they will be tolerated, but not really listened to --- only when they are trying to change the forum that men built.

Oh some non partisan reality - all people today are too fat. Men and women. Men should be blamed more becuase we can live and be very healthy at 5% body fat, no so for women. But look at the majority of men - they all look like the King of Queens. Yeah, I'll bet the ladies LOVE that. Nothing like diabetes, beer bellies, and heart disease to warm the romantic heart. On the plus side, the problem of the aging population on our social security system seems like it might be taking care of itself.

I'll gladly bash other men based on their weight and appearance. Hell, I'll bash myself for the same reasons. It's, as you say, a healthy dose of reality and self-examination. There are many comments made here that would get a boy slapped or worse if he said it in the physical presence of a woman. The amount of outright misogynistic attitudes present on this board never ceases to amaze me, but I suppose that's a byproduct of media indoctrination, bitterness, and light to moderate pornography addiction.

There are many intelligent female contributors to these forums; as with most other communities, that will probably only increase with time. As well, maybe some of the generally accepted attitudes here will eventually change to something supportive of equity and respect among the genders.

Actually, I feel sorry for really fat people. And I often wonder how they let themselves get that way. I realize that there are actual medical problems that some people encounter and that's "normal." What really gets me is the numerous overweight people that don't have a medical condition.

That was another one I had to think about Moonbeam.

Maybe people are genetically/naturally destined to be over-weight.

With our current civilization, there's no evolutionary reason for over-weight genes to be evolved out of our make-up.

True, but evoloution doesn't occur in fifty or sixty years. The recent "fat" trend has only really happened in the last thirty or forty. Far too short of a time for evolution to play any sort of role.

Maybe the over-weight thing is all just an image-thing. Maybe there's really nothing wrong with being over-weight. Like you said there are many over-weight people with no medical problems at all. With our advances in medicine and medical care, I don't see what the problem is with being over-weight.

It's still not very healthy. Personally, I would hate to be overweight. You have a problem if you can't walk at a moderate pace and not become winded over a certain period of time. I'm no where near "in good shape," but I try to exercise to keep my weight down. Fat people aren't attractive. Who wants to belly up to some three hundred pound woman and ask "Looking for a good time?"

Maybe some of the guys around here, but you can count me out.
