Why?

What reason in today's society do we need to be able to do this?

Who wants to belly up to some three hundred pound woman and ask "Looking for a good time?"

See, that's what I'm getting at. It's all really based on looks and not health, everybody just *says* it's all about being healthy.

I enjoy power walking and a bit of running,I'm getting a bike.My cooking/eating habits tends toward the spartan,a really heavy man wouldn't be interested in my lifestyle and might not be able to keep up with me.
A lot of it is about lifestyle compatability not just looks. Btw,I'm not talking about the standard pick up a few pounds over the winter type deal but rather guys who let themselves go and end up in the seriously obese class.

Sure, a lot of it is based on looks. But a great deal of it is also about health. I'd go do the research, but I don't care that much. Numerous studies have shown that the health care costs of overweight people are greater than those people who try to keep in decent shape.

As far as walking a decent amount without becoming winded:
Maybe that's just personal preference. I think it's sad for someone to not be able to walk a little ways and become out of breath. It's walking, for Pete's sake.

Obesity is just unattractive. Of course, some people like to argue that these beliefs are socially constructed through media and how it portrays women. It's just unhealthy and if one can help it, he/she should prevent this from happening. Women with curves are fine in my books. :)

Some people really can't help it...

There are many people who eat just like everyone else and no matter what they do, are just doomed.

Obesity defined means overweight, overweight means overweight. You can be overweight and attractive. What most of you people are describing is called Morbid Obesity. The difference between someone with 20 extra pounds versus someone with 120 extra pounds...

That's all true. The number of mean spirited little wankers sitting there going on and here about what they'd hit or what they wouldn't amazes.I can't imagine they'd dare make some of the comments they make here in real time, somebody would shove their fist down their throats. At any rate I agree with Moonie,if somebody's appearance is not to your prefernce fine, you don't need to date them but this over the top stuff really points to low self-image on the part of the self-proclaimed beauty pagent judges we have as members here.

Its impossible now Ive had time to think it out. The two conditions for a limit of infinity is that a. each iteration must be breater than the last, b. the DIFFERENCE must be monotonically non-decreasing.

Now, assume that a > 1. let n be the nth iteration. for n = 1, n > 1 obviously, so n^n > n.

for n = k, the kth iteration = n, the k+1th iteration = n^a, the difference = n^a-n.
for n = k+1, the k+1th iteration = n^a, the k+2th iteration = (n^a)^a, the difference = ((n^a)^a-n^a)

now, we must prove that ((n^a)^a-n^a) > n^a-n for all a > 1.

uh, my brain is too tired to proceed from here but thats essentially what you have to prove.

Anyway. QED proof ny mathematical Induction.

OMFG I can't believe you're even saying this. What kind of response is that? It's ok to be an obese sonofabitch because we have other means of transportation besides our feet? Jesus. Let's just cut off our legs while we're at it. They're no use to us!!! Hey, we have motor powered wheel chairs!!!

Justifiable reasons would fall under medical problems, eating disorders, or genetics. But the "what reason in today's society do we need to be able to walk at a moderate pace without becoming winded" argument just doesn't fly.

At this point in my life, I'd take just about anyone that isn't going to give me any crap.

As you get older, I think different aspects of people take a more dominant role. Don't get me wrong, I feel attraction does play a significant role, but the term attractive is very subjective. I've seen skinny girls I thought were hot, I've seen some chubby girls I thought were very hot... it's very case by case... heh.

I'm not getting the sexual and emotional uplift I desire by being slavishly adored by the opposite sex so my hate for them as a result leaks out as criticism of the fat dimples in their ass. In this way I establish in my consciousness the 'fact' of my vast superiority. Man oh man look at that fat chick, ain't I a God. Isn't it fun to laugh at her and feel so superior. Naturally I'm nothing but a worthless scumball myself, but it makes me feel better for a second. Hope you don't mind if I indulge myself do you?

1. Are you doing what you are talking about?
2. The guy may have just been expressing an opinion without thinking about his insecurity
3. If I had a dime for everyone who read a psychobabble author (with a dimpled ass) and thought they were Freud reincarnated I'd have enough time to research my *own* insecurity

A little is good - as long as its healthy. Our ideals have gotten a bit lean - women should not, as a rule, have 2% body fat. It screws up the menstrual cycle, calcium absorbtion, and other bad stuff.

But, far more damage is done when we embrace fat and tell people its OK to weigh 30-200% more than a healthy weight. It is not. Aside from all the petty and juvenile talk about haters and jealousy and inferiority complexes, it simply is not healthy.

More of our mothers, sisters, and wives are dying each year because they can't control their eating habits. Heart disease kills more women than all types of cancer combined. Same with men - but that's another thread.

I don't see why that's really a problem. People evolve to fit their society. As hunter/gatherers, fat people didn't last because they ate too much and weren't able to produce for themselves, so they either became more fit or fell by they wayside. Logically, barring medical problems, heavy people could become the "standard" of human existence and the fit/skinny people could be the one's left by the wayside.

First of all, society changes much too fast for evolution to keep up, so you can hardly say that people evolve to fit their society - especially in the case of obesity. Fat individuals were previously selected against when humans lived as hunter-gatherers. But now, the trait isn't being selected for or against, so it's basically at the mercy of genetic drift. (Unless of course it's linked to genes who are actively undergoing selection.) You can't really jump to the conclusion that heavy people could "become the standard."

Anyway, the problem I saw with the statement was that it's basically an excuse to be fat. Since society offers transportation, supermarkets, (over-sized toilet seats :p) it's all of a sudden ok to be fat??? I can't say that I agree with that.

Carpenters and construction workers will probably never impact the world on a global level. So does that give them an excuse to not be knowledgable of what goes on in the world? Think of more related examples. Using your "society" argument, so many things can be justified.

1. Because our society places emphasis on beauty, we should then all run to the nearest plastic surgeon and get face lifts, liposuction, etc.
2. What about different "societies." American society is arguably more violent than Swedish society. So should physical abuse be more acceptble in the U.S. than in other countries?
3. The U.S. has better medical facilities than in most parts of the world, so then should it be ok for a poor child living in a 3rd world country to die of starvation just because it's part of his society.

Basically, I just didn't like the argument on the basis that it seemed like an excuse. To me, it was tantamount to saying, "I like eating like a pig, so it's ok to be fat."
