Sugar & Grains

If you eat crap, you're going to look and feel like crap.

http://www.mercola.com/2003/dec/17/feel_younger.htm

Maybe, too bad Mercola and his ilk are bullshit artists.
"Unfortunately, the body is not designed to accommodate these unnaturally high levels of insulin spiked by grains and sugars."

Right, no sugars, like those in things like fruits and vegetables, foods we evolved to eat. Mhmm.

"Through the Western addiction to grains, sweets, soft drinks, and high-starch foods like potatoes, the modern diet virtually guarantees that not only will a majority of the population become overweight, but they will also look and feel much older than they should."
Somehow, I don't think that things like potatoes are contributing to us being overweight. Eating a full pack of Oreos and a few pints of ice cream in one day might have more to do with it. There's also the fact that we don't need to go wandering for hours to find naturally growing food, or exert a lot of energy hunting down something meaty. Now we drive to the grocery store to load up on calories, but we haven't adjusted our intakes accordingly. THAT is what's causing the obesity problem.

Fruits and vegetables make you feel full due to their high fiber and water content, while carrying relatively few calories for a given volume.

The only benefits that will come from that page will go directly to "Dr" Joseph Mercola, in the form of money for his books.

And what the heck does that guy have against potatoes? He mentions them quite a bit throughout the website.

The dangers of sugar:D
62. Your body changes sugar into 2 to 5 times more fat in the bloodstream than it does starch.
But wait, I thought starch, such as in those evil potatoes, wasn't good either?

73. Sugar may induce cell death.
So can prolonged exposure to time.

76. Sugar can cause gum disease.
Bacteria and their excretions cause gum disease.

68. I.V.s (intravenous feedings) of sugar water can cut off oxygen to your brain.
My god, I had an intestinal infection when I was younger - I couldn't keep anything down, not even water. They weren't giving me an IV to keep me alive, they were trying to finish me off!

58. Sugar is an addictive substance.
These are great, aren't they? Well hey, I guess emotional attachment is also addicitve behavior, isn't it?

49. Sugar can cause an increase in delta, alpha, and theta brain waves which can alter your mind's ability to think clearly.
Golly, I start to get really irritable when my blood sugar drops after forgetting to eat for a few hours.

And many many more. Enjoy. If they were all true, the entire population of the world should have died off a few years after sugar cane reached widespread use.

How to sleep better
"Avoid before-bed snacks, particularly grains and sugars."
Followed by:
"Also eat a small piece of fruit."

No snacks. Fruit is not a snack. Fruit also does not contain sugar.

Damn, that site is hilarious. They sell special salt. "Typical table salt crystals are totally isolated from each other. In order for your body to try to metabolize table salt crystals, it must sacrifice tremendous amounts of energy."
Well good, if it needs to use a lot of energy to, um, dissolve that salt, then maybe it'll help you lose weight, no?

They also sell "special" CFL's. $20 each. Yes, very special. :)

you'd come off more credible if you'd cut the sarcasm. i can't tell if you're being serious about fruits not having sugar or not.

according to my gf's father, we're fat because our water is acidic. so, when you drink it, your liver turns it into fatty acids and makes fat in your body.

Given the material, I didn't think I had to work too hard to sound more credible than what I was ridiculing.:)

Yes, fruits have sugar, I know this. I'd figure that just about anyone knows this.

Someone might as well come on the forum and start going on about the latest free energy device, capable of powering a nuclear submarine with just a 9V battery and a lively hamster. They could expect the same grade of reply as I would give to this "no sugar, grains, or potatoes" site.

Fruits have sugar, but they also have fiber which slows down the rate of absorption of sugar. That's why fruit juice isn't that good for you, but eating the same fruit is.

Atleast I'm pretty sure that's how it works. I've had quite a few chemical compounds called alcohol this evening. Wait, that's sugar.

It was sugar. Bacteria or fungi have since converted it into alcohol.

You're still a boyscout Bugs?

I would have thought that your wife would have 'learned' you by now.

I'd offer a footmassage but I know that your pedifilic instincts would have kicked in and with a church such as yours you'd have earned a very nasty merit badge.

Fvck off lad.

It don't believe it says "NO" sugar. It says "REDUCE" your sugar, grain, potatoes, etc. intake. From my own experience, I find that if I eat more vegetables and meat (yes, meat), that I feel better than if I had ate a plate of spaghetti for example. It's a simple test. If I go out and eat a high carb meal for lunch, I feel like crap when coming back to the office. If I eat vegetables and meat, I feel much better. It's that simple really.

Everyone needs carbohydrates, but our society eats way too much of it from bread, grains, etc. When I go out to eat, I will generally have a salad, a meat dish (fish, chicken, beef - I'd eat people if it tasted good), and a vegetable side. I do this because I know how my body reacts to certain food. I haven't eliminated breads, grains, sugar, but I have greatly reduced the amount of it that I eat. By doing so, I feel better and find it much easier to maintain my weight.

Eat/do whatever works for you ...

When I worked at a warehouse, I ate spaghetti every day for lunch.

My diet consists mainly of sugary things and grains.

I think the problem really is that we're just eating too many calories in general. It's the example I used in my earlier post - in ages past, humans had to go out and scour the landscape to find edible fruits and vegetables, which weren't as large as those we've cultivated now. Or they had to hunt without the benefit of 2-way radios or firearms. Either way, a lot of energy was expended to get relatively few calories.
Now, go buy a bag of Double Stuf Oreos for a few dollars, and you've got 2,520 calories right there, with almost no caloric expenditure.
And, since they're so densely packed with calories, you can eat a lot of them without feeling as full as you would eating some other kind of food.

In times long past, we developed a taste for things that were nutritious, which of course aided our survival greatly. But now we've learned how to separate good taste from nutrition, and as the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility. In separating those two, we've undone millions of years of nature's work, but we don't use this power responsibly.

Personally, I'd love if they could make a meal-in-a-pill product, like in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Eating could then be purely optional. Of course, many companies would then just do away with the lunch break, while offering no pay increase or reduction of hours.

If you eat more calories than you metabolize, then you will gain weight and (because weight gain is cumulative) you will get fat if you keep it up. In fact, the number is 3600 calories per pound of body weight. The opposite BTW is true for weight loss.

Leaving aside other important issues about eating right, nutrition comes into play because more nutritious and more complex foods can sustain your body longer, which in turn means it'll be longer before you get hungry again and overall you'll eat less calories. Think of your body like a fire (a very apt analogy BTW). If you burn paper instead of wood, the fire will burn brightly and quickly, but you'll have to add more paper more often than you would if it was wood or else it will burn out. Sugar and other simple carbs are like paper.

Fruits contain fructose which, when bonded with glucose, becomes sucrose (or pure sugar). Glucose is the primary fuel which your body burns. The production of complex carbs (like starch) into glucose is the one of the primary functions of your liver.

Yeah, and obsesity is common strictly in America.. No way it's wide spread epidemic, not a chance. It couldn't be. Could it?

I just find it crazy that people manage to eat this much. But then, I generally eat less than 2000 calories a day. During the week when I'm busier, it's probably less than 1500 per day. Just being able to eat 3600 calories would make me feel sick.

The Sarcasm is strong with this one.

I think I'll stop in at Domino's tomorrow for one of these. I'll be sure that they send a check for a cut of the proceeds to Moshquerade, who posted the original thread, and some to fritolays for this thread. ;)
