Do you know what the word "lavatory" means? **WITH POLL**

I was at the movies yesterday and as I was leaving the theatre, I asked one of the youngish ladies guarding the door, where I could find the lavatory. Well she looked at me as if I was speaking Aramaic, then repeated back slowly "lav-uh-tore-eee?" so I had to re-phrase the question.

Do people really not know what that word means? Or maybe I'm just an idiot for using it? :hmm:

The only time I hear anyone use the word lavatory is when I am in an airplane. Otherwise, restroom, bathroom, or toilets would be better choices.

They are all synonyms, so I do not see why it should matter, unless that word is truly not used anymore. :hmm:

I only know it because my 5th grade teacher was constantly challenging our vocabulary, and used restroom breaks as a means to do so.

She must have used every word possible to describe the bathroom\toilet
