Chinchillas are so cute. I've always wanted a couple as well. And with your busy schedule, i would think it would be much better than a puppy.

Yes, although I would go out of my way to make time for a puppy... puppies sound more social, although the chinchillas are pretty cute. The defensive peeing thing kinda scares me.

A puppy will pee itself if it's too happy. Mine always did it right on the spot when i came home.

Oh my... :Q Does it still do that?

Don't get a girlfriend for social interaction then either. Mine is both cute and social, weird thing is she pees when she gets defensive.

well if you have roomates that are doggie friendly then a puppy might be possible. having many people in the house would also better socialize it.

Puppies definitely have it's advantages... they really do show love. When you come home, there's nothing like seeing your dog so happy that she'll pee herself. And you can walk and play with them more.

If they start stinking too badly, or just don't work out, you can always make them in to a nice pair of gloves...:p

Ferrets are so smart. They will get into ANYTHING. They're like little explorers. Very fun to play with.

Ferrets are adorable... a friend of mine in college had one. Do they all smell kinda weird though, or was it just my friend's ferret? Them seem to have a strange odor all the time.

You ever thought about a cat? As kittens, they're adorable as hell... and they already come potty trained.

I'm deathly allergic to cats. :( Break out in a rash and have trouble breathing around them...

No offense, but I don't believe people who are gone all the time working, etc. should get a pet. It's not fair to the animal to bring them to your house when you know you won't be able to spend much time with it. Even if you have good intentions (which I believe you do) it's very easy to go from 3 hours a day to 2 to 1 to half an hour to 10 minutes, soon you're just feeding them and that's it. My neighbors both work second shift, but for some reason decided they needed a daschhound (a VERY needy dog), and they never even let it in the house, they just fed it every day and that's it. They finally had to give it away because it was literally dying of loneliness.

Isn't there one particular breed of cat that does cause problems for people with allergies? I know there's one.... can't remember now sorry.

That's what happened to my ex. :( He got a dachshund to keep him company, and he had to work from 5am-7 or 8pm (military)... the poor dog was so poorly behaved and lonely. I'm almost glad he gave the poor thing away (Nibbles) when he was sent overseas...

I have very good intentions, and plan on getting up early to take the puppy (should I get one) for a walk, coming back in the afternoon to take it out during my lunch break, and spending all my time with it after work (6pm)... I would love it and take it out all the time, especially on the weekends... I think I'm responsible enough, but I do have a lot more research to do before making a final decision.

Eeek. I think I'd prefer something with fur/hair...

Ferrets are high maintenance pets. They need play time out of the cage daily, and they do have a smell, although changing bedding regularly and powder baths help. When they are out for play time, they need to be in a ferret proof area. These guys will find trouble if there's trouble to be found.

Because of poor breeding, they are also prone to cancer.

They can be very rewarding pets if taken proper care of.

I think I read somewhere that these little guys need lots of love. If you've got a really busy schedule, you still need to make time for a pet.

Oh dear... I work from 9am-6pm, and my roommates work even later. :( I would spend all my free time with it, though... I'm going to look at some puppies tonight, I've just been feeling the need for an animal as a companion lately...

Thats kind of long hours to leave a dog alone.

It'd be fine for a chinchilla tho since they pretty much sleep all day. I had one for several years.

I didnt read every post here so sorry if this has been addressed:

Chinchillas are great. They are soft, fun to watch, play with and are cute. Low maintenance is a plus.
I do want to mention a few "bad" things though: (someone please correct me if i am wrong)

They cannot get wet, its not that they are allergic to water, but they can get sick very easily. This is why the bathe in "dust", usualy volcano dust.

They have hollow bones, therefore they are very fragile, so if you have kids...they CANNOT drop the chinchilla or let it jump from high places.

Besides that, go for it! :)

Chinchillas are hypoallergenic, right?

Looked it up, can't find any info on it...?
They are as far as I know. They certainly don't have much/any smell or dander. My wife is very allergic to cats and had no problems with the chinchilla even in a small studio apartment.
