I've got two and they're pretty easy to take care of. I work full time and that's no problem since they sleep during the day. Also, they don't stink at all - if they do it's the bedding I'm smelling or it's because I haven't been cleaning their cage lately.

Dezign, with your busy schedule you should get a chinchilla. My ex- told me something interesting about chinchillas (not sure if this is true). If you put them on a bed of flour (or was it baby powder), they'll roll in it to clean themselves.

Close, but you don't use flower. You're supposed to use very fine volcanic ash (you can buy it in pet stores). You put it in a big fish bowl or something and they'll hop in and roll around.....it's pretty funny to watch. The dust helps to pull oil off their fur and keeps them clean.

Ahh, so I learn something new everyday. :)

Ah, the wonder, of ATOT. :)

Do chinchillas cost a lot in terms of health/vet bills?
Not really. They don't need yearly shots and such like ferrets do. The only catch is trying to find a vet familiar with them if you ever have a problem. Shouldn't be too big a deal since you're in LA as I recall and not backwater Mississippi where they think chinchillas are some kind of dinner entree or something. ;)
