do you know anyone that can't burp?

My SO can't burp. At all. Ever.

She has burped like 5 times her entire life.

She gets ridiculous bloating after a meal or some beverages and can't expel the burps. All she gets is a gurgling noise in her throat.

I did a bit of googling and found this:

http://www.mywhimislaw.com/cantburp/topic.php?id=6

But basically, they don't have a solution there.

I told her to try cramming 2 fingers down her throat to see if it would trigger a release of some sort, but it didn't work. That seems to be the #1 remedy for non-burpers.

Anyhoo, this is ATOT so I expect everyone to have a poke at her expense, which is fine, but sprinkled into the idiocy, sometimes you find a gem of a response that actually helps.

Anyone ever hear of this or have any solutions?

TIA

I have the same thing. Odd gurgling noise but no real burp unless its a ton of carbonation and even then it's not controlled by me

Eat tums. Drink soda. Burp.
She had some tums tonight. Laying down seems to be the only thing that really helps. She is relieved almost to the point of tears that I found that link in the OP.

But it seems that there are some folks that actually have either nerve damage (call it a burp nerve) or a valve that won't open.

🙁

I just want my wife to belch like there's no tomorrow 🙁

she can swallow the air, but it doesn't come up. me, i can burp on command by doing that very thing. and i can also guzzle a can of pop and let loose with a raucous awesome burp.

A bit offtopic, but my wife's body will not let her vomit. Regardless of how bad she feels, she just cannot do it. In most cases, she'd feel much better if she could.

yes, i have a friend who can't burp. she has stomach issues b/c of it. 🙁
she also gets the hiccups about every other time we're out drinking. then it's a game to see what we can do to rid her of them.

My wife couldn't burp when I first met her. She can now though. The only thing we can think of that changed was now she has a bit more practice relaxing her throat. 😉

I can't burp (maybe a handful of times on accident), and my stomach gets bloated easily... but I found that if I lay on the bed on my stomach, the farts come. No joke. 😀

I can't burp either. Didn't even know it was unusual or what purpose it served until I read this topic. I also get bloated easily, especially from beer.

Yeah there's not much you can do about. Just avoid consuming a ton of carbonated beverages. Sucks for me because I look like a huge wuss w/ beer even though its the carbonation and not the alcohol that's getting to me.

Diet would be key, like avoiding food combinations that cause excessive gas. I'm not sure if it'd help but Peppermint oil relaxes the stomach muscles/valves. It can make GERD symptoms worse, thus those with GERD avoid it. Just thinking it might be something cheap/easy to try (i.e. starlight mints).

IMO, Medical Science really doesn't know enough about the digestive system, and what we do know there aren't a lot of cures. Mostly it's symptom management, with plenty of side effects. I'd recommend researching diet and especially nutrition, it often is time well spent. The miracle herbs are nice too, but, there's a lot of controversy. If you find any that look promising, you can check out more info on them here and elsewhere.
