I sit in one room all day, talking somewhat with people that I know but only when I dont have anything better to do.
 
Yes.

Easier than IM to talk to a group of people.

I do the same. All of my geek friends and I sit in the same room and have been since we started working. There is conversation every day.
 
Yes, rarely. I only go on when I have some sort of urgent technical question and google isn't giving me any help. You can get a quick answer in there fairly easily.
 
I was on irc from like 1999-2001 24/7. Those were the glory years when I just went to school and then came home and downloaded games/movies.
 
Was on IRC a lot, started out trying to find some Invader ZIM episodes as a high school student, became friends with a lot of the people in the room. Now I go on every once in a while, say sup? and leave with some witty /quit message.

I used to live in IRC back in the Quake days. There wasn't any other way to find quality fights.
