Do you have to have a heatsink?

Absolutely.

HS's have been mandatory since the days of the Pentium.

P4's won't go up in smoke like an Athlon, but you still have to have one.

YES!! The chip will burn up in a matter of minutes without it. You haven't been able to get away without a heatsink since the 486 days.

The heatsink pulls heat from the CPU, the fan moves it from the heatsink to the surrounding air.

I'm a little confused. The heatsink and fan are usually sold as one unit. Are you saying you just have a fan without a big chunk of metal attached to it?

so the fan does not pull it from the CPU?

If it's a retail processor it will have a heatsink and fan included in the package.

that's all you need

the heatsink is always with the fan you never buy it seperate in retail box

I think it is retail because one was OEM and this one said retail. I was freakin out there. but now that I am on this needing stuff will I need thermal greese I think is what it is called.

THIS IS WHAT I ORDERED

You don't NEED it, the heatsink will come with a thermal pad already on it. You just peel off the plastic and put it on. If you're going to be overclocking, then good thermal grease will do a little better than the pad, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

I ordered PC2700 333mhz 512mb ram, is that to bad? I was pushing my budget and could not get the pc3200

It will work fine. You won't get quite the performance out of it you would the PC3200, but unless you're using the machine for really intensive things, you probably won't even notice.

Here's an attempt a an explaination of the heatsink and fan.

The processor produces a very large amount of heat for it's size. Since the die has a very small surface area (usually 70-120mm^2), it's hard for it to dissapate heat well. On top of the die sits a heatsink. This is made with a material that has a high thermal conductivity such as aluminum or copper. Neither the surface of the die (the P4 has a heatspreader which keeps the die from getting cracked) nor the bottom of the heatsink are perfect. Therefore a thermaly conductive paste is used. This comes in the form of a TIM, or thermal interface material, or a thermal grease (which can also come as a thermal glue to keep the heatsink and processor from coming apart easily).

The TIM will likely be on your heatsink, which you should recieve as part of the retail Pentium 4 package. It's a pad on the bottom of the heatsink. It will melt and fill in the small gaps in the heatsink and processor. Thermal grease does the same thing.

Surface area is key to cooling, so the heatsink will have many fins. They could have ridges on them to further increase the heat dissapation. However, the processor will produce *so much* heat, that a heatsink alone won't be adequate. You'll need a fan to force air through the fins and whisk away heat. A case exhaust fan will suck the air out of the case.

Hope this helps.

Heh, yeah, I remember that thread.

Well, I'll put it this way. Every retail processor I've installed since 2000 has come with a thermal pad.

In layman terms.

If you dont have a heatsink, then the CPU will be as hot as a frying pan and will be sufficient to fry an egg on it. Frying pans are made to withstand heat. But inside a CPU, there is delicate circuitry inside and think of what will happen to that circuitry if it is allowed to get that hot.

When you buy a CPU, in most cases, a heatsink (the big metal thingy with lots of fins) and a fan would be included as well as the CPU itself. Just carefully place the CPU chip into the motherboard and clip the heatsink and fan on top. There should be instructions to do so in the package. No biggie. It's not like a heatsink and fan is going to severely degrade your computer's performance or be of any nuisence. The factory heatsink + fan is usually sufficient unless ur gonna O/C it.

Thats not too good if your overclocking, dual-channel is shoudl be fine. You should really research before buying stuff man...

I did research but I doubt I will be overclocking and I was running low on funds so I got this instead maybe I can get some better stuff one day if i want to overclock

You did research.... but yet you don't know if you "need" a Heat Sink?

I suggest doing more research... like in a LOT of research.

Maybe you need this...

I have a bowling ball that's sharper... :D
