I use MythTV. Google it and take a look. It is a very mature free software package for linux. There are still some bugs in the software but they have a very active development team and community.

That's not accurate. You pay $12.95/mo on the first TiVo and $6.95/mo on every TiVo after that up to a total of 7 TiVos.

That said I have 3 TiVos and couldn't live without one of them. The convenience far outweighs the cost.

it IS accurate. I pay $6.95 for both of mine. All you have to do is ask. ;)

And dont wanna pay a monthly fee.
The current generation Tivo's are leaps and bounds better than the original Phillips Series 1 Tivo's. My parents have had the same Series 2 Tivo for at least three years without a problem.

In addition, if there's ever a serious problem out of warranty, Tivo will fix it for a flat fee and transfer your lifetime subscription to the new box they send you. I think the flat fee is ~$100, which isn't too bad.

no that is inaccurate. IF you are paying only 6.95 you are getting a deal that is not available to the public.

I suppose you are right it is YMMV, but I just called and told them I was going to discontinue service, and they offered me a $6.95 rate for both boxes.

I have a hacked xbox and could get a usenet account.

It's honestly so freakin easy to just set to record, then watch it whenever. I don't really want to deal w/ finding something, dloading it, ftp'ing to my xbox, then wondering if the feds are going to be breaking my door down in 6 months

newzbins, homenetwork. (nothing is stored on my xbox) I normally have the episode dled before its aired on the west coast where I live

I kept calling and negotiated the price with them. I now get cable internet, digital cable with dual tuner dvr and all HBOs and starz for like $104 a month which is pretty good.

Yeah and dont you already need the cable box to pick up digital channels?

So if I used Tivo with digital cable I would have to rent a comcast dvr dual tuner box, then buy a tivo then pay the tivo monthly fee then buy a landline which i dont have?

No, yes, yes, no.

So with the Tivo box I would be able to get all the digital cable channels and ondemand without renting a box from comcast? And it doesnt need a landline either?

I also use MythTV running on Ubuntu Linux. It works very well and is reliable, but the only downside is the setup. I'm not a big Linux geek so it took weeks of reading HOWTO's and going over the documentation just to get the thing running. There are still parts of it that are broken (I haven't set up the remote control yet, so I'm still using a keyboard), but overall it's good, and free.

Yes you need a digital box, but no, you do not need a "comcast dvr dual tuner box."
You may need a landline for initial setup ONLY, but there are several methods around this that are effective for most people.

What is a better alternative? I pay $140 a month (inc internet) vs about $70 if I take off everything except basic cable and internet.

EDIT::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I have two choices for broadband; bellsouth (dsl) and comcast (cable)

I have NO use for a home phone. That would be a waste of money.

Since I already HAVE to pay for cable tv to have cable internet, might as well stick with comcast vs going for an alternative method for isp then another for tv

I pay $78 for my cable service and have a 40 hour Tivo that I modded, with the latest software I have a 320g HD, I get about 100 hours of programming at the best video quality. I love the Tivo....

Well isnt the comcast dvr dual tuner box about the same price as a regular digital box? the dual tuner one is $9.95 a month, how much is a regular digital box?

Comcast DVR, I don't need no stupid HTPC with buggy issues that might cause it not to record something, Comcast is batting 1.000 for me so far in this case.
