I've always been very wary of using kitty litter as a base, simply because it can degrade (by design) and pollute your tank. Is there a paticular brand that you recommend to get around that? What's the one that you used?

i do not remember the brand but it was the only kind that the grocery store sold. i gently washed it before using it in the tank and because it is covered with the sand it was never really disturbed other then planting new plants and by an oversized placostamas who was quickly removed. that base lasted for a couple of years and the water was crystal clear nearly the entire time.

In 4th grade we had a tank in the classroom and there was an algae eater and I think two other fish and then one day one of the other fish was gone and we think the algae guy ate him.

I have a 37 gallon cube saltwater reef tank. Just purchased a 75 gallon tank to upgrade my 37 to. I'm then turning the 37 into a coral frag tank.

Holy shnikies, thanks for all the great replies guys! Wuffsunie, awesome post, thanks for the info! I have an airbrush, so I will use that on the tank's background instead of vinyl. Our local pet store just got in some fantail guppies which are awesome, we may get those with maybe some neons instead. Also, exnay on the live plants. We haven't found any we like. My wife wants a 10 gallon and nothing bigger because of our apartment size.

I love my tropicals :)

little 45l tank, live planted (which is simply amazing, live planted>*), 1 bala shark, 1 bristlenose catfish (awesome little algae eater, does a great job), 2 corydoras, 2 hockey stick tetras and 6 neon tetras.

Not a single fatilty in three or four months we've had them, all looked much healthier after we went live planted, fish get on very well, basically

I don't have any pets. I have enough to do, enough to distract me. We had fish tanks when I was a kid and I liked them well enough, although it wasn't my job to keep them up. They're cool.

How long can you go on vacation before your fish start to die?

There's a cat (probably feral) that has taken residence in my back yard. I've been feeding her for the last couple of weeks. That's as close to a pet I think I'm going to get for a while. She's pretty sweet but will not accept any affection. She regards me with suspicion if I move too fast. I can touch her sometimes, but she doesn't regard my overtures as affectionate. However, I don't have to take her to the vet. :p

I say don't get gold fish, they will increase the nitrrogen levels in your water and kill your other fish. They are the nastiest fish of them all.

We got a tank!!!

They were having a sale on a stand, tank, and lid with light for just over $100, so we nabbed it. It's a really nice 20-gallon fish tank with a beautiful oak stand. I got the filter and everything installed and it looks beautiful. I'm going to let it cycle till Monday and then we're getting the fish. We've decided to get goldfish. Our local pet store has a big selection of them.

Yes! But apparently 20 - 29 tanks are better for beginners because it's more forgiving if you mess up. Here's what we got today:

-stand/20-gallon tank/lid with light
-Pengiun 200 (50 gallon iirc) filter - really quiet
-bubble bar (makes a wall of bubbles) plus the hoses and air generator
-decorations and gravel
-dechlorinator

This will be a coldwater tank. We are only keeping goldfish in it, probably six. We found these great googly-eyed goldfish that look like aliens. Now my wife wants a 10-gallon so we can get fantail guppies too. Mission: success! :D

have added a lot since then. Good stuff! It is addictive, I'm trying to figure out a place to put a 220 gallon reef.

Your first tank was a reef tank?? You are teh l33t :Q

a reef tank is actually easier to keep and maintain as reefs do not produce much waste compared to fish. But its the water chemistry that is challenging.

I figured why not go for the gusto?

What they don't tell you about reef tanks is the cost. That tank easily has 1500 bucks into it.

c'mon, step over to the dark side.

True to an extent. Gotta keep that water perfect. I've learned that your corals will get real ticked off, real quick if everything is no inline. Plus some of those critters are toxic and can reak havoc on the whole tank if something happens.

say an anemome getting sucked into a powerhead. been there, don't want to do it again.
